UB Lecturers Initiated SME Establishment at Babussalam Al-Firdaus Islamic Boarding School

Babussalam Al-Firdaus Islamic Boarding School which is located in the Bocek village, Karangploso, Malang Regency, East Java is an educational institution that prioritizes the formation of personality and mental attitudes as well as imparting Islamic religious knowledge.

In addition to providing Islamic education, the caretakers of the cottage strive to build economic independence, including by establishing canteen and simple processing of pasteurized milk by the students of Babussalam Al-Firdaus Islamic Boarding School.

However, in the process, the students are constrained by the short shelf life of pasteurized milk products, which is less than one week at 4oC temperature storage, resulting in limited distribution and marketing development. This becomes a basis for the doctoral team of Universitas Brawijaya to conduct community service in developing the dairy products and their derivatives at the Islamic boarding school.

Driven by Prof. Dr. Ir. Elok Zubaidah, MP, from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, UB DM team consisting of Dr. Widya Dwi Rukmi Putri, STP, MP, Mochamad Nurcholis, STP., MP., Ph.D, Mokhamad Nur, STP, M.Sc., Ph.D, and Tanalyna Hasna, STP, MS from FTP UB and Aldila Putri Rahayu , SP., MP from FP UB disseminates the technology for processing dairy products to the students of Babussalam Al-Firdaus Islamic boarding school, Karangploso.

“We deliberately disseminate technology in this boarding school in hopes that it can become the basis for the establishment of a small industry (SME) based on dairy and bakery products so that it can increase the independence of the boarding school. We also hope that this activity can be a provision for the students later after entering the community, especially during a pandemic like now, “Prof. Elok explained.

Furthermore, it was also explained that the activities starting from April to August 2021 include several agendas such as providing materials and practices for diversification of dairy-based processed products and bakery products, socialization and training on packaging and storage technology, training on the application of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), economics analysis and business feasibility, business management assistance to marketing.

Some of the diversification of dairy products taught in these activities include various dairy products (yoghurt, kefir, butter, milk candy), various bakery products (white bread, sweet bread, donuts), various pastries (croissants, puff pastry, danish pastry) and various cake (brownies, banana cake, english fruit cake).

Drs. H. Imam Supandi, M.Si, the caretaker of Babussalam Al-Firdaus Islamic Boarding School, expressed his gratitude to the team of UB lecturers who are willing to train the students as well as increasing their income so that it is not only a routine activity but also increases the students’ money.

“Also thanks to this activity that the students’ insight has become more open. It turns out that there are many things that can be processed from milk and its derivatives. Alhamdulillah, may Allah bless you,” he concluded. (dse/Humas UB/ Trans. Iir)
