LPPM UB through the Doctor Serve 2020 program synergizes with Bina Hangtuah Youth Organization of Pasuruan City to reduce plastic waste in the Doctor Serve program (DM). The form of synergy carried out by the two parties is by providing a distillator machine with the capacity of 10 kg to convert plastic waste into fuel, such as diesel, premium, and kerosene.
The engine made by Muryani from Wlingi-Blitar Regency produces 1.5 liters premium with the temperature of 750C, produces 1.5 liters of kerosene with the temperature of 1250C and produces kerosene as much as 1.5 liters with the temperature of 1200C.
To maintain the continuity of this plastic waste processing activity, LPPM UB synergizes with Bina Hangtuah youth organization through the Waste Bank of Tambaan Indah unit. Synergy is manifested in the form of an operational cooperation agreement using distillator machine that has been granted by LPPM Universitas Brawijaya to the Youth Organization.
Basically, the collaboration states that the youth organization, led by Anggi Sutiyana, provides distillator and operator personnel including field assistants, while the Waste Bank led by M Thoyib Marsito provides personnel to short the plastic waste and dry it so that it can be processed into fuel.
Tambaan Beach, which is located in Tambaan, Panggungrejo sub-district, Pasuruan city, is one of the coastal areas where there is a lot of plastic waste that comes from two rivers that empties into the Tambaan coast.
The two rivers are Gembong River which comes from the eastern Pasuruan Regency and Welung River which comes from the West Pasuruan Regency.
The two rivers carry plastic waste with the most common type of polypropylene. This is a type of plastic commonly used for wrapping dry food (snacks), plastic straws, medicine bags, covers, plastic cups, bags, bottles.
In addition, HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) plastic waste is also found, which is colored of milky white / pure white plastic which is commonly used for tissue bags, detergent bottles, oil, heat-resistant plastic, plastic pipes, grocery bags and plastic bags. The impact caused by plastic waste on the beach can threaten the health of the surrounding community, cause water pollution that can threaten marine life, especially fish and coastal aesthetics that are unsightly.
If the plastic waste is not handled, further, it will reduce the quality of the Tambaan beach environment. This condition is getting worse over time and of course endangers public health, considering that this plastic waste is not biodegradable.
The results of a study conducted by Gilbert et al (1996) stated that garbage is a waste that has an impact on humans and the surrounding environment. The impact of plastic waste on humans and the environment can be categorized into three aspects, which are the impact on health, the environment, and socio-economic impacts. Thus, for any reason, plastic waste will endanger human life, especially from the health perspective. Recently, laboratory results from a university in America explained that many aqua bottles contain lots of plastic flakes.
To solve the problem of plastic waste to be sustainable, the Doctor Serve program, which started in 2019, was created in the form of a memorandum of understanding between the Bina Hang Tuah Youth Organization and the Waste Bank of Tambaan Indah unit.
“Why the memorandum of understanding is needed? because in 2019, after the beach is clean from plastic waste, it turns out that plastic waste is full again, the reason is that each organization member is busy with their respective jobs. By working together with waste banks, hopefully plastic waste will continue to be handled, “said the Head of the Doctor Serve LPPM Team, Dr. Rudianto, MA.
Rudi hopes that by this program, plastic waste on the Tambaan beach will be clean and can be converted into economic value and can provide benefits for fishermen, especially if the price of fuel increases. [OD / Humas UB/ Trans. Iir]
