Four students of Faculty of Engineering of Brawijaya University Malang created a zig-zag designed waste filtering device. A device named as ZUGOS a Zig-zag Ultra Grey Water in O-sandfil (Organic Sand Filter) method was successfully decline pH and turbidity of household waste.
ZUGOS motivated by concern with household wastewater which immediately thrown away without treatment first. The condition exacerbated by numbers of terraced house. Initially, waste is not big deals, but due to rapid population growth, household wastewater also increases.
The higher level of waste in Indonesia reach 70-75%, motivated four students of Faculty of Engineering of Brawijaya University namely Siska Ramadhani, Ayu Khurotul Aini Amalia, Dwi Laksana Aji Putra and Yayang Saputra to create a device on which able to filter household wastewater particularly for terraced houses.
ZUGOS consists of a storage container containing Kelor seed powder. The container is the first stage in filtering process. After the container, there is a zig-zag designed pipe. In the pipe, there is a sand filter, zeolite, charcoal and fibers. The slope of zig-zag pipe is ±30° with a length of two meters and a diameter of three inches.
“We deliberately use kelor seed powder as it has not been widely used in Indonesia. Therefore, we choose kelor seed powder since containing substances that can decline pH and can also decline level of turbidity. In the future, we expected to be able to develop the device and so to be better in wastewater processing into clean water,” said Ayu.
