A number of lecturers from the Study Programme of Fine Arts (SPFA) Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) held a batik workshop in Lakemba, Australia for the MTRI Sydney Community (Majelis Ta’lim Raudhatul Ilmi Sydney) on Wednesday (11/1/2023). This workshop was held in collaboration with MTRI Sydney and the SPFA FCS UB.
This workshop aims to partner collaboration to increase internationalization opportunities and collaboration in international community service programmes. Dyanningrum Pradhikta, S.Sn., M.Ds., the chairman of this activity, said that this collaboration needs to be implemented to improve the quality and bargaining power of study programmes, one of which is through the Working Lecturer Grant (Dokar).
The workshop which was attended by 70 participants was held enthusiastically and warmly. It began with an explanation of the history of batik by Dyanningrum Pradhikta. It continued with hand-written batik practice guided by Fatmawati, S.Sn., M.Sn. and a team of lecturers of the SPFA FCS UB (Mayang Anggrian, S.Pd., M.Pd., A. Syarifuddin Rohman, S.Pd., M.Pd., and I Kadek Yudi Astawan, S.Sn., M.Sn.).
The practice of batik making started with pattern making up to the wax washing. The result is batik-patterned cloth with attractive colors.
Wiwit, an MTRI community member, enthusiastically participated in this activity.
“After this workshop, I want to try it with other colors and wider cloth sizes. It seems it would be interesting to design it myself,” Wiwit said.
After the workshop activities, the two parties exchanged tokens of appreciation from the SPFA FCS UB, represented by Prof. Zuliati Rohmah, as Head of the SPFA FCS UB, and from MTRI represented by Enis Yuliati, the Head of MTRI Sydney.
Ennis welcomed it and hoped that the activity could be sustainable.
“This activity will encourage the creativity of women. It would be nice if in the future this activity not only targets women adults but also targets the young Indonesian youth community here,” she concluded. [dts/PR FCS]
