UB Emphasizes the Importance of Health, Safety, and Environment to New Students

Campus health, safety, and environment (K3L) were the main focus on the first day of the Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB) of Universitas Brawijaya (UB) which took place on Monday (12/8/2024) at the Samantha Krida Building as the opening material. Prof. Dr. Ir. Qomariyatus Sholihah, Amd.Hyp, ST., M.Kes., IPU., ASEAN, as the Head of the K3L Division, emphasized the importance of a culture of safety and discipline as an integral part of student life in the university environment.

“My children here are already new students. That means your lives are different from when you were in high school. My children must be able to always cultivate a disciplined life,” said Prof. Qomariyatus in her presentation.

The implementation of occupational safety and health standards at UB is not only intended for students but also for staff and campus visitors. The Head of the K3L Division explained that his division has a big responsibility to maintain occupational safety, health, and the environment at UB, all of which are directed towards creating a safe and comfortable learning environment.

Malang, the city where UB is located, is known as an area that is prone to earthquakes and is surrounded by active volcanoes. Prof. Qomariyatus emphasized the importance of understanding these risks, especially in the context of tall buildings towering over the campus area. According to her, attention to safety in the campus environment is crucial, given the potential for these threats.

“Universitas Brawijaya is always committed to maintaining the safety and welfare of the entire campus community. We follow the Regional Regulation that regulates the height of educational buildings should not exceed four floors ideally, in accordance with the potential earthquake risk,” she explained.

In addition, other aspects of K3L that are important for new students to pay attention to include order on campus such as smoking rules, permits for pruning trees, and prohibitions on unethical actions such as brawls or drug use. Prof. Qomariyatus also highlighted the importance of following traffic regulations on campus, including for motorcycle users, private cars, and pedestrians.

In addition to physical safety, the Head of the K3L Division also highlighted the importance of stress management and mental health for new students, especially for those who live in boarding houses. Life outside the home, according to her, requires coordination and independence in facing various challenges.

“Students are considered adults, not junior high or high school students anymore. Therefore, you must be able to manage activities independently, especially when living in boarding houses. Insecurity in the boarding house environment, such as fire hazards, noise, or poor water quality, must be taken seriously,” she said.

New students were also reminded of the risk of accidents on campus, especially in faculties that have laboratories such as the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Agricultural Technology. The professor emphasized the importance of following standard operating procedures (SOP) when working in the laboratory to prevent work accidents.

In addition to physical and mental safety, good nutritional intake is important to support health and learning safety. A balanced diet, according to her, not only helps in maintaining concentration and productivity but also prevents fatigue that can lead to injury or illness.

“Adequate nutritional intake is very important to maintain your health and well-being. This is also part of learning safety that should not be ignored,” she said.

In closing, she emphasized that K3L is not only an obligation, but also an investment for a better future.

“Grow awareness of K3L in our campus environment, not only as an obligation, but as an investment for the future. Health, safety, and a well-maintained environment not only create a safe place to study, but also support the growth of knowledge and creativity. Let us together protect ourselves, protect our friends, and protect our environment, because only then can we achieve true achievements and success,” she concluded.

With the implementation of strict K3L standards, Universitas Brawijaya is committed to creating a campus environment that is not only safe and comfortable, but also supports the academic and personal success of students. This is proof that UB is not only focused on academic education, but also on the overall welfare of its campus community. [dea/sitirahma/ UB PR/ Trans. Iir]
