UB Held Sign Language Training for Educational Staff

Brawijaya University (UB) as an inclusive campus has held sign language training for Educational staff at UB.

Within UB campus environment, sign language is an important aspect of services for students with disabilities in providing access to information in the field of academic services.

Therefore, the Subdirectorate of Disability Services (SLD UB) held sign language training for Educational staff in improving their sign language skills, at the Grand Mercure hotel, Malang (Tuesday, 17/10/2023).

This activity was attended by 74 educational staff participants from various units and faculties in UB, ranging from front office staff on duty in the office to security staff on duty in the field.

This event was attended by Dr. Rosihan Asmara as Director of the Directorate of Administration and Academic Services (DALA) who also opened the activity.

In his speech, Dr. Rosihan emphasized UB’s seriousness as a disability-friendly campus in providing facilities and services for disabled students at UB.

“Therefore, we as an academic community must participate in improving sign language skills to communicate with students with disabilities. “That’s why we hold sign language training for staff in UB,” said Rosihan.

Then according to Zubaidah Ningsih as Head of SLD UB, he said that the importance of UB’s efforts to provide sign language training for students at UB as a communication tool.

“This is UB’s effort to become an inclusive campus, therefore it is important to provide sign language training to Educational staff so they are able to serve students with deaf disabilities,” she said.

In addition, Zubaidah also hopes that Sign Language will also become a language culture that can be applied and preserved in UB environment.

“My hope is that sign language culture will become a communication culture for UB residents so that there will be more participation from deaf friends at UB,” added Zubaidah.

This training was facilitated by 5 sign language teachers from students with deaf disabilities, including Dewa Bagaskara, Endjie Apta, Fasya Hariyuda P, Hafiz Ilmi and M Arsa Alamasyah.

According to one of the deaf teachers, Fasya Hariyuda, who teaches awareness of deafness and basic sign language such as material about alphabetic signs, greetings, names of faculties, departments and also academic services.

According to him, this material is very important to provide as basic capital for being able to sign language. “It is hoped that this material can help students to communicate, especially with deaf people,” said Fasya.

Moreover, according to Pandu Wiguno, one of the training participants said that this training was extraordinary, because this was new knowledge for the front office staff at UB Educational Development Institute.

“This is new knowledge for me as front office staff at LPP UB and I have also served disabled employees who interact at LPP and have been greatly helped by this training,” he said.

Of the various activities organized by SLD UB, one of which is Sign Language training for Educational Staff, this is a form of UB’s seriousness in creating an inclusive environment for disabled students at UB. (UB PR/ Trans. Iir).
