The meaning of independence in the field of education means that people get a proper education without any difficulties up to a high level to achieve the desired goals. This is in accordance with Independent Learning-Independent Campus (MBKM) program designed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbudristek), which essentially encourages students to be able to develop their potential so that they are ready to become firm graduates.

Currently, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) has implemented eight forms of MBKM learning, namely certified internships, projects in villages (social, infrastructure), campus teaching (teaching in remote areas), student exchange (taking classes at other universities), research, entrepreneurship, independent projects, and humanitarian projects.

“There have been 63 students participating in student exchanges abroad through the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) program, 89 students participating in the Independent Student Exchange at universities outside Java, 9 students participating in the International Credit Transfer program, 90 students participating in a certified internship program that called Bangkit in collaboration with Google and several large companies in the field of technology, as well as other programs,” said Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. dr. Aulanni’am, DES, Saturday (15/08/2021).

Prof. Aulanni’am said that the main goal of MBKM is to add knowledge and experience to students outside of campus. So that they will get challenges and opportunities to develop creativity and independence through the realities and dynamics in the field. With this program, the learning process on campus is more flexible/autonomous, so that the learning culture is not rigid, which is expected to produced independent and cultured people.

“MBKM facilitates students to explore their potential, and prepare themselves for the world of work. By participating in the MBKM program, it is expected that excellent human resources will be born and become Advanced Indonesia,” she said.

Meanwhile, UB Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Nuhfil Hanani AR., MS said, actually UB has implemented independent learning since before the decree from the Ministry of Education and Culture, although partially. However, currently UB has implemented MBKM in its entirety according to the policy of the Directorate General of Higher Education, namely taking learning outside the study program in the same university and outside the university, both nationally and internationally, and also in industry.

“In UB, there are units that are responsible for every MBKM program offered by the Directorate General of Higher Education. Guidelines have been made and all study programs have been implemented. I hope that students can take advantage of MBKM to increase their competitiveness to prepare for future careers,” concluded the Rector. [Irene/Humas UB/ Trans. Iir]
