The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Brawijaya (FPUB), which will soon be transformed into the Faculty of Bio-Industry, Agriculture and Forestry, is taking a strategic role as host of a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the main focus on developing the domestic market for processed wood products. This FGD is an integral part of the ITTO PD 928/22 Rev Project. 1 (I), an initiative aimed at strengthening the processed wood industry in Indonesia, especially in East Java, which is known as the center of the national wood industry.

The FGD which was held on Tuesday (26/6) became a forum for various stakeholders to collaborate and have in-depth discussions. Present at this event were representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), East Java Provincial Forest Service, Perum Perhutani, East Java Disperindag, as well as various wood industry associations. In addition, active participation from academics and practitioners in the forestry sector also enriched the discussion and provided a comprehensive perspective.

Dean of FPUB, Prof. Mangku Purnomo, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D in his speech, emphasized the importance of the processed wood industry for the national economy.

“This industry not only provides a significant contribution to GDP, but also absorbs a lot of labor and encourages economic growth in various sectors. Moreover, FPUB is also committed to supporting the sustainable development of the forestry sector through research, education and community service,” explained Mangku.

Meanwhile, the Director of Forest Product Processing and Marketing Development at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry who delivered speech via video, highlighted the huge potential of the domestic market for processed wood.

“The domestic market is a very potential market for the national wood industry. “The importance of collaboration between stakeholders in developing this market, including through strengthening supply chains, increasing production capacity and product innovation,” he said.

This FGD discussed various important issues related to the processed wood industry. One of the main focuses is how to increase the competitiveness of processed wood products in the domestic market. Various strategies are discussed, including product innovation, improving quality, production efficiency, and developing effective marketing strategies.

Furthermore, the FGD also highlighted the importance of strengthening institutions and coordination between stakeholders in the processed wood industry. This is expected to create a more conducive industrial ecosystem and support sustainable industrial growth.

It is hoped that this FGD can produce the formulation of a comprehensive and implementable national strategy for developing the domestic market for processed wood products. It is hoped that this strategy can become a reference for stakeholders in advancing the processed wood industry in Indonesia, so that it can make a greater contribution to the national economy and support sustainable development.
