UB is Appointed by DJKI to become the Organizer of Patent Examiners Go to Campus

Preparatory Meeting of Patent Examiners Go to Campus

Universitas Brawijaya (UB) is appointed by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) as one of the universities that will take part in the Patent Examiners Go to Campus. Patent Examiners Go to Campus is one of DJKI’s 2023 flagship programs as an effort to increase domestic patent applications.

As a preparation for Patent Examiners Go to Campus at UB, the Directorate of Innovation and Business Incubator (DI2B) UB held an online preparatory meeting with DJKI, Monday (17/04/2023). The Inspection Coordinator from DJKI, Rani Nuradi S.Si explained that currently the patent protection proposed by universities is not very strong due to the poor formulation of patent specifications.

“Poor formulation means that the scope of patent claims filed is still narrow, still on a laboratory scale. This means that many of these cases are implemented into the industry and the value of these claims is no longer valid. Therefore the Patent Examiners Go to Campus activity is carried out for technical assistance on the potential for commercialization of higher education patents,” said Rani.

The arrival of the Patent Examiner Team to UB is scheduled for June 12-27 2023 offline for 16 days, and will continue online. The Examining Team will intensively assist the inventor in formulating a claim value so that it has a strong protection value.

It is targeted that as many as 60 patent documents will be corrected and accompanied directly by two patent examiners, namely Drs. Ahmad Muniri and Ir. Aribudhi Nugroho Suyono, M.IPL. Each inventor is given the opportunity to assist by an examiner.

Head of Center for Intellectual Property Rights (HKI) UB Dr. Dian Eka Ratnawati, S.Sc., M.Kom said, with this activity it is expected that patent applications will be examined by examiners according to their fields, there will be technical consultations on the patent system for stakeholders, as well as technical consultations regarding the potential for patent commercialization.

“This opportunity is extraordinary and of course UB will make the best use of it,” said Dian.

Also attending this meeting was the Main Patent Inspector of DJKI Drs. Ahmad Muniri and several teams in the field of Intellectual Property Cooperation and Empowerment, as well as the Head of UB DI2B Business Incubation Center Inggang Perwangsa Nuralam, S.E., MBA., Ph.D, and UB HKI team.

The Patent Examiners Go to Campus activities will include presentation and discussion regarding intellectual property in general, assistance in preparing patent specifications or patent drafting, services from the Patent Examiner Team to inventors who have submitted patent drafts. The Examining Team will assist with the completion of patent applications and conduct Training of Trainers for inventors.

In addition to UB, DJKI also appointed nine other State Universities to organize this program, namely the University of Indonesia, Bandung Institute of Technology (LPIK-ITB), Diponegoro University, Gadjah Mada University, Airlangga University Surabaya, North Sumatra University, Hasanuddin University, Lambung Mangkurat University, and Sam Ratulangi University.

Dian hopes that this activity can be attended by UB Research and Community Service Agency (BPPM) and all prospective inventors. [DER/Irene/ Humas UB/ Trans. Iir]
