UB and South Barito Regency Government Signed MOU to Increase Regional Potential

Brawijaya University (UB) and the South Barito Regency Government established cooperation through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was held in the Banquet Room, 6th floor of Brawijaya University Rectorate Building, Tuesday (16/01/2024). This event was attended by a number of high-ranking officials from UB, including the Rector, Vice Rectors, and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, as well as the Regent of South Barito and his staff.

UB Rector, Prof. Widodo, conveyed the importance of this collaboration in optimizing the natural resources of South Barito Regency. “South Barito Regency has a lot of natural resources and they must be processed, not just exported in the form of raw materials. Therefore, we need to increase cooperation, especially in increasing the added value of natural wealth and human resources,” he said

According to Prof. Widodo, as a university, UB has the responsibility to improve Human Resources (HR) throughout Indonesian society, especially in South Barito Regency. “The Regent is very concerned with human resources so he provides scholarships to underprivileged and high achieving people. UB also wants to increase outreach to all communities in Indonesia, especially places that need to be affirmed to improve the quality of human resources,” he added.

On the same occasion, Dr. H. Deddy Winarwan, M.Si, acting as the Regent of South Barito explained that this collaboration involved the education, community service and research sectors.

“South Barito Regency has many natural resources that can be used as a focus of research and community service. Therefore, we need cooperative assistance from academics and professors at Brawijaya University,” he said

“The choice of UB as a work partner is because the access from Kalimantan to UB is easy, UB is the best reference university in Indonesia, and the cost of living in Malang is more affordable. South Barito Regency is committed to providing scholarships to 75 students who excel and come from underprivileged families to pursue undergraduate education domestically,” added Deddy.

It is hoped that this collaboration can develop the potential of the fisheries and agricultural sectors, provide added value to the community, increase income, and have a positive impact on government management in villages.

With support and assistance from UB academics, it is hoped that potentials that have not been well exploited so far can be optimized for the progress of South Barito Regency. (WDD/UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
