UB Together with Universiti Teknologi Petronas Malaysia Build Clean Water Supply Project

The Surabaya Pavement Project is an international collaborative project based on the University Social Responsibility (USR) program to provide clean water for residents living in volcanic areas. The concept is to install a prototype of sustainable clean water filtration. This activity is carried out jointly by the Student Representative Council, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) and 13 engineering students from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). The activity was held in Pandansari Lor Village, Jabung District, Pakis Village, Malang Regency.

The opening ceremony of The Surabaya Pavement Project was held on Thursday (22/9) in Widyaloka Building (UB). Presented in the opening ceremony, the Rector, Widodo, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D.Med.Sc. In the opening series, the International Conference on Education Science and Agriculture was held with the keynote speaker Prof. Eko Ganis Sukoharsono, SE, MCom (Accy), MCom-Hons, CSP, CA, PH.D (UB) with the theme “The Concept of Village Autonomy Development Based on Agriculture and SDGs”. Dr. Muhammad Ridhuan Tony Lim Abdullah (UTP) carries the theme “Futures Literacy in Higher Education: Game Changer for Future-Proof Society”. This international conference is open to the public.

The installation of the prototype was carried out on Saturday (24/9) with the main event held at the Pandansari Lor Village Hall attended by Dodik Mulyo Santoso as the Village Head, village officials, and other invited guests. In addition to the installation of the prototype, there is clean water counseling to the residents of Pandasari Lor.

There are two kinds of prototypes with different outputs and functions developed by KKR UTP, namely the POE (Point-of-Entry) prototype and the POU (Point-of-Use) prototype. The water purification system at POE consists of 3 steps, namely a Sediment Filter to remove suspended matter such as sand, mud, clay, or organic matter from water, a Water Resin Softener Filter to remove mineral hard water from the water, and a third filter, an Activated Carbon Filter to remove organic particles, organically produced chemicals and taste and odor compounds from water. Purification of water in the POU prototype consists of 3 steps, namely, Sediment Filter to remove suspended matter such as sand, mud, clay, or organic matter from water, Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane Filter to remove pollutants such as heavy metals, microorganisms, organic matter and mineral ions. Water condensed with pollutants will be drained out of the drain hose, and a third Activated Carbon Filter to remove organic particles, organically produced chemicals and taste and odor compounds from the water.

The implementation of The Surabaya Pavement Project is expected to improve the standard of living of the people of Pandansari Lor Village in a sustainable manner by implementing a water filtration system to gain access to clean water. In addition, the creation of global ties between Indonesia and Malaysia with the promotion of culture and traditions. The collaboration between UB and UTP can continue and it is hoped that this project can become the main gateway for other projects that are beneficial for the interests of Universitas Brawijaya.[dpm/humasub/ Trans.
