As a follow up to the cooperation agreement between Universitas Brawijaya, Arterial Research and Educational Network in the Asia Pacific (ARENA-PAC) and Indonesia Research and Education Network (IDREN), UB held an operational inauguration. This inauguration was held on Wednesday (9/8/2023) at the Algorithm Auditorium, Faculty of Computer Science.
This inauguration was carried out directly by Prof. Widodo. S.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D as the Rector and witnessed by Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, H.E Heri Akhmadi and Task executor of Secretary of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology, Prof. Tjitjik Sri Tjahjandarie, Ph.D. Also present Prof. Jun Murai and Prof. Keiko Okawa from Keio University and Dr. Achmad Affandi, as Head of IDREN and institutional partners.
This collaboration, according to Widodo, is not only about speed. “But also collaboration and dissemination between institutions. This network infrastructure, is not only about data transfer, but also a channel to be able to collaborate, innovate faster and be ready to jump in the digital era,” he explained.
The collaboration between the three institutions will provide the first 100 Gbps high-speed network connection in Indonesia, which will be dedicated to education and research. This network connects IDREN with UB as the gateway, to Guam and Tokyo, as well as several other locations. In addition, this opportunity is also a big leap for Indonesia to be connected to the current global research and education network.
On the same occasion, UB gave the title of Adjunct Professor in the field of Computer Networks to Prof. Jun Murai, as Co-Director of ARENA-PAC. This award is a form of UB’s appreciation for Jun’s contribution in the development of the internet world.
“This honor reflects our deep appreciation for his commitment to academic growth and international cooperation. UB proudly welcomes Prof. Murai as part of the community and his dedication in developing global connectivity and education is indelible. The synergy between UB and Prof. Murai has enriched both institutions, driving academic excellence and global collaboration,” he added.
Through this collaboration, Tjitjik hopes to be the beginning of increased collaboration. “Not only in infrastructure, but also in research and education. In addition, this network can be expanded to the area, especially in eastern Indonesia,” she explained.
There is also an interactive discussion demonstration of 8K uncompressed two-way audio video streaming between UB and Keio University, Japan. This demonstration will show the quality of the seamless connection between two countries in real time.
It is hoped that this added speed will further encourage this kind of activity, which will increase Indonesia’s capabilities and contribution in the world of research and education, as well as accelerating digital transformation in these two fields. (VQ/ UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
