Community Service Team of Vocational Faculty Develops Character Building in SMPN 15 Malang

The community service team from the Faculty of Vocational Studies, Universitas Brawijaya has successfully implemented a character education development program at State Junior High School 15 (SMPN 15) Malang City to prevent acts of sexual violence and bullying among students through cultivating ethics and empathy. The program, entitled “Cultivating Ethics and Empathy: Developing a Character Building Program as a Proactive Step in Preventing Acts of Sexual Violence and Bullying for Students” took place from March to October 2024 with very positive results.

Led by Susilowati, S.Sos, M.AB, together with a team consisting of lecturers and students, this activity involved all stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and students. This program is one of the proactive efforts in creating a safe, inclusive learning environment that supports student development.

The program consists of various activities, ranging from ethics and empathy training for students, training for teachers and school staff, to counseling sessions for parents. Through a comprehensive approach, the program aims to shape students’ character so that they have a positive attitude in interacting with fellow friends, reduce the potential for violent acts, and increase awareness of the importance of respectful relationships.

According to Susilowati, the training involves case simulations, group discussions, and materials that are relevant to the context of students’ daily lives.

“We hope that through this program, students can understand the negative impacts of bullying and sexual violence and become agents of change in their schools,” she said.

The results of the post-program survey showed an increase in students’ understanding of the importance of ethics and empathy, with more than 85% of students feeling more aware of the impact of their actions on others. In addition, data from the school showed a significant decrease, namely 35%, in cases of sexual violence and bullying since the program was implemented.

Parents’ participation in school activities has also increased. They play an active role in supporting the implementation of the program and helping to monitor the development of their children’s behavior at home.

“Collaboration between schools, teachers, and parents is very important to ensure that this program runs well and sustainably,” added Susilowati.

Susilowati hopes that similar programs can be expanded to other schools in Malang and its surroundings.

“They also proposed the need for periodic monitoring and evaluation so that the positive impact of this program can continue to be felt in the long term. This community service program is funded through an internal grant from Vocational Faculty, Universitas Brawijaya and is part of the university’s efforts to support the prevention of violence in the educational environment,” she said.
