Fishery waste is one of the problems faced by the community around the Mutiara Laut cooperative, which is located in Pejagan Village, Bangkalan District, Bangkalan Regency, Madura. One type of waste that is widely produced in this area is shellfish. In this area, there are various types of shellfish, such as korkor shellfish (Anadara granosa), gelatik shellfish (Anadara pilula), simpih shellfish (Amusium pleuronectes), and thorn shellfish (Bolinus brandaris).
Usually, local people only use the shellfish meat, while the shellfish shells are simply thrown away, causing the accumulation of shellfish shell waste every day.
Seeing the problem of shell waste in the area, the Doctoral Service Team of Universitas Brawijaya (UB) consisting of lecturers and students from the Faculty of Medicine (FK), Faculty of Health Sciences (FIKES) and the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) chaired by Dr. apt. Anisyah Achmad, S.Si., Sp.FRS, conducted a series of socialization activities themed “Training on processing shell waste into rich calcium flour products and cosmetics” which took place on Saturday (22/6).
Anisyah stated that this activity is one of the efforts to empower the people of Pejagan Village, especially the people around the Mutiara Laut Cooperative, to work to produce rich calcium health food products and cosmetic products in the form of powder and masks from shell raw materials.
“With this training, it is hoped that residents can gain knowledge and skills in utilizing shell waste, which was previously considered useless, into high-value products and can improve the quality of life and provide new economic opportunities for local residents. Through this activity, village communities can improve their economic welfare by creating new sources of income, as well as contributing to maintaining the cleanliness and sustainability of the local environment,” explained Anisyah.
