The Team Doctoral Service Universitas Brawijaya initiated Sanan Village, Malang City to become a pilot for the Urban Farming area since it has potential to develop the livestock sector.
Vice Rector for Cooperation Universitas Brawijaya (UB), Prof. Dr. Ir. M. Sasmito Djati, MS. IPU said that the livestock sector is like a center for fattening cattle and processing sewage into an alternative energy source.
“It makes Sanan as a pilot for urban farming area,” he said.
Sasmito said that his party cooperates with Faculty of Animal Husbandry (Fapet) UB Lecturers, namely Dr.Ir. Kuswati, MS, IPM., ASEAN Eng and Dr.Ir. Tri Eko Susilorini, MP, IPM., ASEAN Eng.
As an expert lecturer of beef cattle, Kuswati said, the cattle sheds in Sanan village are still simple and less hygienic, so that it can affect the growth rate of cows.
Fix off the cage can be done by making a communal cage, which is a cage that is jointly managed by the breeders.
However, efforts to repair the cage must be accompanied by increased awareness of breeders to do good farming practices. Such as the management of stables maintenance, a shed with the capacity of 10 cows, providing concentrate feed according to livestock needs, and installing biogas under the shed.
“Communal shed can be managed collectively to increase livestock production and the co-existence of the herd. Besides, it also facilitates the management of maintaining and handling of livestock sewage, as a raw material for biogas, “said Kuswati.
Sasmito and Kuswati hope that this community service program can create a climate that encourages the growth of community participation in environmental cleanliness. Therefore, it can accelerate regional development towards advance village, independent, prosperous, and environmentally friendly.
In addition, through community service activities, the doctoral service team can solve the waste problem in Sanan, both waste from tempe industry and livestock sewage. So, it is able to increase community skills and community income.
Kampung Sanan, which is located in Purwantoro Village, Blimbing District, Malang City, is known as Tempe Industry Center. This is because almost 90 percent of the people of Sanan work as tempe entrepreneurs, from the micro level to the large scale. On the other hand, they also have around 800 beef cattle.
Cattle fattening is done by utilizing tempe-making waste. Soybean shells are used as the main feed, while the liquid waste is given to livestock for drinking.
While the shed model used is an individual cage or a single cage and is placed on the riverbank. So, the disposal of livestock sewage leads directly to river flows which can cause environmental problems. (dta / Humas UB/ Trans. Iir).
