DM Team Implements Good Farming Practices For Goat- Sheep Farmers

The Doctoral Service Team of Universitas Brawijaya carried out activities to strengthen goat and sheep farmer groups in Mundurejo Village, Umbulsari District, Jember Regency to encourage local farmer groups to become independent in raising goats and sheep. The activities carried out through the implementation of Good Farming Practices (GFP) to the goat-sheep farmer group “Sumber Rejeki” were carried out together with a combination of several faculties, including the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Faculty of Administrative Sciences.

The activity also aims to improve the skills and knowledge of farmers, improve livestock management, and increase the productivity and welfare of farmers.

Technical guidance was carried out on (3/8-4/8/2024) by UB Doctoral Service team consisting of, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tri Eko Susilorini, MP., IPM., ASEAN Eng., Prof. Dr. Sc. Agr. Ir. Suyadi, MS., IPU., ASEAN Eng., Prof. Dr. Ir. Kuswati, MS., IPM., ASEAN Eng., drh. Widi Nugroho, Ph.D, Rini Dwi Wahyuni, M.Sc., S.Pt., MP, and Latifah Hanum, SE., MSA.,Ak and assisted by 5 PKM-DM students.

The activities carried out cover various aspects, from daily care to livestock reproduction and health management. Farmers are taught how to choose good seeds, efficient cage maintenance techniques, and proper feeding.

In addition, they are also equipped with knowledge about signs of disease in livestock and how to handle them.

In this activity, through a participatory approach, farmers are invited to be actively involved in the learning process and share experiences among fellow group members. In addition, they are given information about marketing opportunities. Furthermore, they are also taught direct practice in making appropriate technology, namely making silage and concentrate for goat and sheep feed.

“I feel that the knowledge provided by Universitas Brawijaya Doctoral Service team in managing goats and sheep is very useful, from previously knowing nothing to knowing everything,” said one of the farmers, Ismail.

Meanwhile, the head of Sumber Rejeki livestock group, Mr. Saiful Apandi, said that this activity greatly supports the strengthening of goat and sheep livestock groups in Mundurejo Village so that in the future farmers will be able to produce quality goats and sheep to improve the village economy.

At the end of the activity, the Head of the Doctoral Service Team, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tri Eko Susilorini, MP., IPM., ASEAN Eng. said that by strengthening goat and sheep livestock groups and implementing Good Farming Practice (GFP), it is hoped that Mundurejo Village, Umbulsari District, Jember Regency can be an example for other regions in achieving sustainable development goals to improve community welfare.

This program as a whole supports the achievement of SDGs, especially in terms of poverty alleviation, hunger, and sustainable economic development at the local level.

The results of this program are expected to be able to create livestock groups in Mundurejo Village that are more independent and competitive. With the increased skills and knowledge gained, it is expected that farmers can manage their livestock businesses more efficiently, increase production, and contribute to local economic development.
