The Law Debate Team from the Faculty of Law, Universitas Brawijaya (FH UB), consisting of Nur Ro’in Ni’matus S (2022), Atta Barra Othman (2023), and Quinto Halomoan (2023), successfully achieved a proud achievement by winning 3rd place in the 2024 Gelora Sparta Law Debate competition. This competition was held by the University of North Sumatra (USU) from August 11 to September 1, 2024, and was attended by various top universities in Indonesia. including several other universities outside the top 10
Carrying the main theme “Revitalization of Legal System Components as a Progressive Step Towards Golden Indonesia 2045 Through Thought Contests,” this competition is a place for law students to show off their skills to compete in arguments related to contemporary legal issues. One of the motions faced by UB FH Team in the fight for third place is “The Urgency of Deferred Prosecution Agreement Regulations in Corporate Criminal Liability.”
Atta Barra Othman, one of the team members, explained that they did not choose the motion directly, but rather the motion was chosen through a “spin wheel” mechanism by the committee. “This motion is very interesting because it is related to the Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA), a regulation that has not been widely discussed in Indonesia,” said Atta. The challenge in facing this motion requires them to conduct in-depth research in the midst of a busy lecture schedule.
“The challenge is balancing time between research and lecture responsibilities. However, this is not an obstacle for us, it actually spurs the spirit to be more productive,” said Atta.
In addition to legal technical skills, this debate also tests critical thinking skills and strong argumentation. “Participating in the national legal debate competition broadens our horizons. Many of the materials we learn during the debate are not taught in college, and this really broadens our horizons and challenges us,” added Atta
The Gelora Sparta Legal Debate Competition provides an opportunity for law students to discuss and explore current legal issues, especially those related to efforts to revitalize the legal system towards the Golden Indonesia 2045. In addition to improving debate and analysis skills, this event also trains public speaking and problem-solving skills, which are essential in understanding contemporary legal issues.
Atta’s team hopes that this achievement can motivate other students to be more active in participating in similar competitions. “I hope other students can be more courageous in participating in debate competitions like this. Not only to deepen their understanding of the law, but also to train their critical thinking skills and public speaking skills,” said Atta.
In addition, they emphasized the importance of participating in academic competitions to develop their potential and expand their networks in the legal and academic world. “The experience of participating in this competition not only broadens our horizons in legal issues, but also builds other skills that are very important in the professional world,” added Atta.
The participation and achievements of UB FH Team in Gelora Sparta 2024 confirm Universitas Brawijaya as one of the leading legal education institutions in Indonesia.
