UB Chemical Engineering Got Second Place in National Level Factory Design Competition

Students of Chemical Engineering Program Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya (FT-UB PSTK) scores achievement at the national level.

This time the team of Hafiz Tandiyanto P., Dwi Lerian Friatnasary, and Rhezaldian Eka Darmawan managed to be runner up in the Plant Design Competition (PDC) national level organized by the Student Association of Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Riau (HIMATEKI UR), 7-9 April 2016.

In the final presentation round consisting of 11 finalists, UB’s team must compete with teams from other leading universities in Indonesia. They are Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), 10 November Institute of Technology (ITS), State University of Semarang (UNNES), and the host University of Riau.

In competition with the theme Plant Design of Oleo and Petrochemical, UB’s team presented the paper entitled “The production of homopolymer polypropylene capacity of 300,000 Ton / Year from Propylene Polymerization Processes Using Gas Phase (Unipol)”.

“In this competition, we designed a plant for the production of plastic raw materials,” said team leader, Hafizh.

The background of the design is due to high plastic commodity demand in the country. Almost all the packaged goods that we consume daily are made of plastic.

According to Hafiz, the advantage of the design is the kind of plastic products that are produced are widely used in the plastics industry. Moreover, the production process is also designed to be easer and more simple.

“Now, most our plastic ore is still imported. So the team takes advantage of these opportunities, “he explained.

In other words, plastic ore plant in Indonesia is still very little. So the opportunity to invest in the plastic ore industrial sector is still very huge.

Hafiz claimed this design can be applied to a large industrial scale, but depending investor who is interested to fund.

Other team members, Rhezaldian, admitt to be quite proud of the achievements. Moreover, they can beat and compete with students majoring in chemical engineering from other renowned universities.

Rhezaldian said PSTK UB students are already familiar with the plant design activities. It is not separated from chemical engineering students who are required to have competence in the field of plant design.

“In our study there is also a lesson subject on Factory Designing. The task report can be up to 300 pages, “said Rhezaldian.

As for the competition, which is one of the events of Chemical Engineering Week 2016 HIMATEKI UR, the first and third rank was won by teams from the Gadjah Mada University. (And/ems)
