T-Vest, Vest for Muscles and Bone Disorder Therapy Created by UB Students

T-Vest: innovative vest with a heat and light therapy system for muscle and bone disorders sufferers

Five Brawijaya University (UB) students created an innovative vest with a heat and light therapy system for muscle and bone disorders sufferers called the T-Vest. This vest can be used to treat muscle and bone problems for people at risk of developing these disorders, such as workers.

The five UB students are Hazel Geraldy Martinus (FKG), Hans Jovan (FKG), Salsa Adilla Ilianis (FKG), Fajrul Fallaah Hidayatulloh (FT), and Dhimas Effendi Kurniawan (FT). With the guidance of lecturer, Dr. Thareq Barasabha, M.T., they provide solutions for sufferers of muscle and bone disorders to speed up the healing process and relieve the pain experienced by sufferers.

The title of this innovation is “Low-Level Laser and Thermotherapy System Equipped with IoT Integrated Gyroscope Sensor Monitoring to Accelerate Healing of Musculoskeletal Disorders”.

According to Basic Health Research, in 2018 the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in Indonesia reached 7.3 percent. In Indonesia itself, the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders due to work factors is quite high. A study by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia concluded that around 40.5 percent of illnesses suffered by workers were work-related.

“This vest with a light and heat therapy system is expected to provide pain relief effects and speed up the healing process of musculoskeletal disorders experienced by sufferers. “In addition, it is also hoped that this vest can prevent the occurrence or development of muscle and bone disorders,” said Hazel as team leader.

Light therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy, is a therapy that emits light into the body which will later be absorbed by cells and tissues in the body and produce chemical compounds that will be used as energy to speed up healing and relieve pain.

Meanwhile, heat therapy is a therapy that uses heat to relieve pain and reduce inflammation that occurs in the tissue.

In addition, this vest is equipped with a gyroscope sensor which aims to detect changes in the user’s posture. When the user is in a position that is too bent, the sensor will send a notification to the user to correct the posture.

“The entire system on this vest has been integrated with IoT in an application so that users can control the entire system through the application,” said Fallaah.

The low-level laser and thermotherapy system equipped with IoT integrated gyroscope sensor monitoring, named T-Vest, is an innovation of Creative Initiative Student Creativity Program (PKM) organized by the Directorate General of Learning and Student Affairs, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology.
