Visiting Hometown, UB Rector and Team Carry Out Community Service in the Fields of Health, Education and Economy

Rector of Brawijaya University, Prof. Widodo, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D.Med.Sc carried out community service activities in his hometown, Bojonegoro, Thursday (23/11/2023). The community service entitled “Scientist of UB Goes to Schools” and “Scientist of UB Goes to Village” is focused on three activities. First, counseling and dental examination activities, second, providing material on “Strategies for Passing Publication in Reputable International Journals”, and third, strengthening BUMDES institutions.

The Rector started this activity by motivating the students of SMPN 1 Kapas, his previous school. He conveyed his ups and downs while studying at SMPN 1 Kapas. Starting from riding a bicycle on roads that are still bad and muddy, to taking the time to look for grass after school to help parents raise goats.

“Because he often felt too hot in the rice fields, a passion arose to learn and change his fate. If you want to be successful, the key word is to have strong dreams. The big enemy of people who want to be successful is laziness,” said the Rector.

The Coordinator of Community Service Activities, Dr. Mohammad Nuh, S.I.P., M.Si explained that the aim of this program is to introduce UB widely to the community and provide benefits in the fields of health, education and the economy, especially at the village level through real programs.

“The role of higher education must be felt more clearly by society, not only developing the world of education, but there must be a downstream process of science and technology. The hope is that through activities like this, community will feel direct benefits from the scientific and technological developments developed by UB,” explained Nuh.

Dental counseling and examination activities were carried out at SMPN 1 Kapas District. The activity began with education on the importance of dental care by a team of dentists from the Faculty of Dentistry and continued with a dental examination. The aim of this activity is to provide education from an early age about the importance of maintaining dental health.

To support these dental examinations, the team brought in a dental car belonging to FKG UB with adequate facilities in the dental health sector for education and community services.

In the second activity, the Rector gave material on “Strategies for Passing Publication in Reputable International Journals” at STIE Scholar Bojonegoro. In this activity, the Rector was accompanied by two professors, namely Prof. Akhmad Sabarudin, S.Sc., M.Sc., Dr.Sc and Prof. Sugiono, S.T., M.T., Ph.D. Both are experienced in writing international journals. Where Prof. Akhmad Sabarudin is a chemistry professor with the number one category at UB whose writings are indexed by Scopus journals and WebScience, while Prof. Sugiono from Industrial Engineering who contributed to designing fast and light trains in Indonesia.

“This activity at STIE is intended to transfer knowledge from UB to other universities so that they can do the same thing in scientific publications. We also have high concern for STIE to progress further by opening a new study program, namely Computer Science, and UB is open to bridging collaborations with related faculties,” said the Rector.

In the final activity, the team strengthened the State Owned Enterprises (BumDes)  institution in Ngadiluhur Village so that they were better able to manage business and economic activities in the village.

As being understood, BUMDES is expected to become a business institution in the village that is able to create jobs through business development and entrepreneurship. One of the steps that must be taken is to strengthen institutions by providing understanding to administrators about BUMDES governance and the use of technology.

“The use of information technology for BUMDES is very important, especially in economic activities in the current era. “As a means of promotion and organizational efficiency,” concluded Nuh. [MN/Irene/ UB PR/ Trans. Iir]
