The Center of Civilization Studies Launches Nugie

In the world of Industrial Revolution 4.0, technology is one of the pillars of a tourism promotion strategy and can be a driving force to attract tourists even in less well-known tourist spots. The use of the internet of things (IoT) can contribute greatly in making tourism places as one of the objects of the global market, even able to create new markets in various other fields.
In line with this, the UB Tourism Study Center has conducted research for three years (2017-2020) and produced an output in the form of an android-based application prototype named Nugie (Nusantara Guide). This application aims to provide a digital navigation and information platform about cultural heritages in Indonesia, particularly the Indonesian Cultural Heritage. In addition, this application also connects the owners of tour guides, tour and travel services, and homestays (Community Based Tourism) in one application platform on the user’s mobile device. The technologies developed in this application include Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), 360 ° Camera, Drones, Photogrammetry, Geo-Location and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping or SLAM. The interface of this application is in the form of interactive 3D digital navigation. So that it can be a direction, and display information on a historical site that is being visited by the user simultaneously.
Field trials of Nugie application have been carried out at Mpu Tantular Museum, Sidoarjo. As a result, this application has succeeded in becoming a digital guide that can guide users to explore the main collectibles in the museum simultaneously. The documentation of this trial can be seen more clearly on the website of the Center for Civilization Studies, www.psp.ub.ac.id.
The Nugie application is still a prototype, so research and design still have to be done in the future. Criticism and constructive suggestions are expected so that the application can be better and more useful.
