Center for Environmental Studies LPPM UB introduces the concept of Eco-Energy housing based on vernacular architecture. This study was funded through Research Strengthening Grant UB Study Center.
Head of Center for Environmental Studies of LPPM UB, Ir. Agung Murti Nugroho, ST., MT., Ph.D explained that the concept of Eco-energy housing is an idea developed based on the research road map of Universitas Brawijaya, especially energy independence.
The eco-energy residential concept that Agung and his team have developed is currently the result of measuring field objects in several locations, including Bolon Batak Houses, Lombok Sade Houses, Madura Ward Houses, Samin Blora Houses and modern vernacular houses in Yogyakarta. Some of the results of field measurements related to the comfort of the thermal environment in several of these buildings have been presented at international seminar forums and sent to accredited national journals and compiled in draft international journal papers.
The Indonesian Eco-energy Housing concept includes five principles and five models of building envelopes, namely shading, conditioning, humidity control, cooling and natural conditioning.
The principle is based on the development of natural architecture or bio-architecture that fully utilizes natural energy-saving potential and is based on a scientific approach. The five resulting building envelope models are climate responsive wall cladding, ventilated wall cladding, breathable wall cladding, double wall cladding and bio-climatic wall cladding.
The thermal environmental performance of the climate responsive envelope in buildings follows the thermal environment in vernacular dwellings that have wide openings.
In the ventilation wall sheath, it is indicated by the performance of the thermal environment, especially the air temperature which is lower than the outside environment, especially during the day, through the difference between an opening at the top to release hot air, an opening in the middle for cooling and an opening at the bottom to remove moisture.
The performance of the thermal environment for the breathable wall cladding especially in decreasing air temperature and humidity although at certain times is still outside the comfort limit of the thermal environment.
The double wall cladding model is the integration of two walls with a certain distance using low conductivity materials that are able to maintain the stability of the residential air temperature within comfortable limits of the thermal environment.
Bio-climatic wall covering is a modern vernacular development in the form of adding a vertical garden to the double walls of a building with the selection of certain plants which are not only able to create natural comfort but also support natural health, especially improving air quality. “This research is collaborating with undergraduate and postgraduate students in the independent research MBKM program for LPDP lecturers. Case studies of vernacular houses which are the object of research are spread out,” said Agung.
Agung added, these five models will continue to be developed for roof and floor coverings. Several elements of past dwellings that are a priority to be applied to limited land dwellings are porous or inner courtyard elements.
“These two components have been registered with IPR under the names ROSTER and COSTER which stands for Cavity Tropical Architectural Ventilation System and Courtyard Tropical Architectural Ventilation System,” he said.
In the next stage the research will be carried out in accordance with the research road map of the Center for Environmental Studies which is divided into three main stages, namely: first, 2021-2025 related to basic research in the field of sustainable environment; second, 2026-2030 focusing on environmentally sustainable intermediate products and technologies and third, 2031-2035 achieving environmentally sustainable advanced products and technologies.
The Eco Energy housing concept was also offered during a meeting with the PUPR Housing Director General to be implemented in their flats. They developed flats throughout Indonesia. They asked to include the concept of eco-energy housing.
I have offered the concept and they agreed that it will be implemented throughout Indonesia. It will be implemented in the next two years,” he said. (AG/Humas UB/ Trans. Iir).
