The use of fossil energy is a global challenge, including the increasing need and impact of its use on the environment. This intensive use of energy not only causes carbon emissions but also increases dependence on non-renewable resources. This requires innovation in combustion technology and energy efficiency, with a primary focus on global research and development.

This is was presented by Prof. Ir. Agung Sugeng Widodo, ST., MT., Ph.D, a new professor in the field of Energy and Gas Combustion at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya. Agung offers the concept of I-SMS (Innovation of Material and Fin Sheath), a finned heat reflector that functions to capture and reflect back heat from conventional stoves, for thermal efficiency.
According to Widodo, the distance between the sheath and loading affects gas efficiency. “Previous studies have shown that heat reflectors or covers have the ability to increase the efficiency of LPG stoves. Various materials and reflector dimensions have been reported to produce different levels of improvement. In addition, the reflective properties of the material also affect its ability to reflect heat,” he said
I-SMS proves that adding a sheath with certain materials and configurations to a water heating system can increase efficiency by approximately 8 percent, because the process of capturing and reflecting heat is isolated inside the sheath. This concept not only adds material to the system, but also applies fins at certain angles to produce maximum efficiency. Although the system becomes more complex and requires more intensive maintenance, this innovation is a significant breakthrough in energy efficiency. “With I-SMS, we can reduce energy waste, improve heating performance, and present more environmentally friendly solutions,” he said.
Prof. Ir. Agung Sugeng Widodo, ST., MT., Ph.D is the 31st professor of the Faculty of Engineering, and the 421st professor at Universitas Brawijaya.
