Prof. Daduk Setyohadi is Inaugurated as a Professor in Fish Population Dynamics

Prof. Dr. Ir. Daduk Setyohadi, M.P

Prof. Dr. Ir. Daduk Setyohadi, MP was inaugurated as a professor, Wednesday (5/28/2025), at the Samantha Krida building, Universitas Brawijaya (UB). He is a Professor in the field of Fish Population Dynamics at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK). Daduk is the 27th active Professor at FPIK, the 253rd active Professor at UB, and the 431st Professor of all Professors produced by UB.

He researches the Bali Strait Lemuru which is the only representative of single-species fisheries in Indonesia with a specific purse seine Fishing Gear (API).

Since 2010, the trend of lemuru fishing has shown a sharp decline without any significant recovery. This decline is mainly caused by excessive and non-selective fishing patterns, most fish, including immature ones, are caught before they have a chance to breed.

Seeing this threat, Prof. Daduk Setyohadi developed a new approach, namely the Bali Strait Sustainable Lemuru Fisheries Certification Technology (TSPLB-UB). This is a local certification system designed to be simpler, more measurable, and suitable for Indonesian conditions—without having to wait for the complexity of international certification standards.

This certification technology requires information on only six main indicators, namely (1) have the fish had time to spawn before being caught? (2) is the number of fish caught still below the safe limit? (3) is the size of the fish caught large enough (≥17.3 cm)? (4) is the size of the net hole large enough for small fish to escape? (5) do fishermen have official permits? and (6) do fishermen report their catches correctly?

The six indicators are very focused on ensuring the level of sustainability of the resources to be certified. Thus, the certification process can be done faster compared to other global certification standards.

With the current condition of Indonesian fisheries data available, TSPLB-UB certification technology is very possible to be developed and applied to capture fisheries in Indonesia. This technology can be used further by the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP) in preparing an operational framework for capture fisheries certification. [MIT/UB PR/ Trans. Iir]
