During the Odd Semester holiday for the 2024/2025 Academic Year, the Information Technology Education Study Program (PTI Study Program) Faculty of Computer Science, Universitas Brawijaya (FILKOM UB) held an Object-Based Programming Skills Training Using Java Language (3/2 – 7/2/2025). With 20 students of PTI Study Program as participants, this activity was carried out face-to-face in the classroom of Building F, 4th floor of FILKOM UB. The training material was delivered by two FILKOM lecturers who are competent in their fields, namely Ir. Tri Afirianto, S.T., M.T. and Ir. Satrio Agung Wicaksono, S.Kom., M.Kom.

Ir. Admaja Dwi Herlambang, S.Pd., M.Pd. as the chief executive said that this training is a co-curricular activity carried out to be a provision activity as well as strengthening skills related to object-oriented programming (Object-Oriented Programming/OOP). The provision activity is intended for students who initially do not have OOP-related skills so that they can understand the initial scientific structure so that they are better prepared to undergo lectures in the even semester. Meanwhile, the strengthening activity is intended for students who have previously taken lectures related to OOP to be able to use this activity to enrich their learning experience so that there is a refresher and do not forget what was previously known and are better prepared to receive more complex lecture materials in the even semester. Java language was chosen as the OOP teaching medium since in the information technology industry that continues to grow, many leading technology companies use Java as the main language for developing enterprise and mobile applications. In addition, Java language is considered quite easy to be used as a medium for implementation and teaching related to the object-based programming paradigm.

“OOP is important to master in terms of thinking paradigms and techniques. On the paradigm side of thinking, the object-based paradigm makes problem-solving activities simpler and easier to communicate to others. Then from the technical side, it allows developers to manage code in a more structured, easy to maintain, reusable, or even relearned way to solve similar problems. On the pragmatic side, OOP is widely used by leading technology companies in large-scale application development. We want students to have these skills so that they can hold the benefits from the paradigm side of thinking, technical, and pragmatic so that they are more flexible in adapting to meet the demands of the industry in the future,” explained Ir. Admaja.

The activities that the participants got during the five-day training were dominated by direct practice activities and case studies. Participants were given the opportunity to practice OOP based on case studies presented by the Speaker. The material includes Introduction to OOP and the concept of classes and objects; encapsulation and implementation of Getter/Setter; inheritance and overriding; Polymorphism: Overloading and Overriding. With the implementation of this training, it is also hoped that participants can be more confident and ready to face the Even Semester lectures of the 2024/2025 Academic Year which will start on February 12, 2025.
