The Center for Student Research and Scientific Studies (PRISMA) Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Brawijaya (FP UB) invites State Islamic Middle School (MTs) students from Batu City to manage waste responsibly. This activity is a series of ‘Prisma Serve 2024 (Prisma Mengabdi)’ activities with the theme “Trash to Cash: Improving the Character of State MTS Students in Batu City through the Development of Waste Management to Support the 2030 SDGs.

The first week of PRISMA MENGABDI was filled with material closely related to waste management. Participants were invited to dive into the world of waste management.

The activity was also filled with stories about the success of the Zerolim and Ecoliving communities in processing waste into organic fertilizer and recycling crafts which were taught to participants.

Through this activity, 70 waste management cadres have been formed at MTSN Batu City. The enthusiasm of MTSN 1 Batu City participants in participating in PRISMA MENGABDI activities should be appreciated. This shows that the younger generation has high concern for the environment and is ready to take a role in preserving it. The highlight of this first week’s activities is the symbolic installation of handbands to the organic cadre coordinator and inorganic cadre coordinator. A sign of their important role in leading and motivating their friends in managing waste well.

In the second week, PRISMA MENGABDI held the creation of a Waste Bank and trained cadres in managing the waste bank effectively.

The socialization began with a presentation regarding the benefits of the Waste Bank. This activity was also accompanied by the making of a wall magazine with the theme “Managed Waste, Maintained Environment”. This wall-magazine is a concrete manifestation of awareness of the importance of efficient waste management to preserve the environment. Not only theoretical explanations, PRISMA MENGABDI also provides practical experience through the concept and creation of a Waste Bank. Participants are invited to understand directly the processes and operations of the Waste Bank, so that they can implement it effectively in their respective environments.

With the knowledge and skills gained, participants are expected to be ready to become agents of change in an effort to maintain a clean environment and achieve a greener and more sustainable future. The third week’s activities at PRISMA MENGABDI were in the spotlight with efforts to build awareness of environmental conservation through the use of biopore.

In this initiative, 30 environmental ambassadors from MTSN 1 Kota Batu were educated about the importance of biopore banks and effective ways to maintain and utilize them. Not only providing theory, this week’s activities also offer practical opportunities with demonstrations of making biopores. It is hoped that this initial step can inspire student participation in implementing environmental conservation practices in their surrounding environment.

Chief Executive of PRISMA Mengabdi, Ni Putu Reka Sentana Dewi hopes that through PRISMA Mengabdi it is hoped that the enthusiasm and knowledge that is instilled can continue to inspire and encourage positive changes in the surrounding environment and become the basis for further actions in supporting environmental sustainability.
