In building our character, we must still rely on the cultural roots of our nation. Students as the younger generation must be part of continuing the struggle of their predecessors who sacrificed their blood and lives to achieve the independence we enjoy today. This can be realized by always loving culture, loving diversity, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, and implementing all the values of Pancasila.
This was conveyed by the Minister of Villages, Disadvantaged Areas and Transmigration, Drs. A. Halim Iskandar, M.Pd when welcoming new students of Universitas Brawijaya (UB). This remarks was conveyed through video recordings at the Opening of the Introduction to Campus Life for New Students of Universitas Brawijaya (PKKMB-UB) 2020 which was held online, Saturday (19/09/2020).
He continued, UB students who are 99 percent come from villages, to not forget their place of origin. “With this extraordinary opportunity to be able to study at this campus, it is an important part of fighting for a more advanced village. Don’t forget the condition of our village community, because our parents, grandparents, our relatives who are in the village are the responsibility of all of us. Use this opportunity to study and apply knowledge to help villagers, “he said to 14,492 UB new students.

He also advised to students, besides being diligent in studying, it must remained to committed to various development efforts. “Studying with a GPA of 4 is ordinary, what is extraordinary is those who have a GPA of 4, but are also active in activities both on and off campus, and interact with various social communities, so that when you graduate you will become a person who is full of knowledge, insights, and have a commitment to social activities, “he explained.
The same thing was conveyed by the Minister of Education and Culture, Nadiem Makarim in his remarks video. He said, various activities outside the campus can increase student competence to provide solutions to real problems faced by society.
“Therefore, there is an Independent Campus currently which encourages us all to become long life students, thirst to continue learning, explore talents according to our interests, and increase competency excellence in the new era of education, the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0. and society 5.0, because there is flexibility for students in studying, both in lectures, as well as other activities such as internships, teaching in villages, and so on, “he explained.
On the occasion, the President of EM UB 2020, Muhammad Farhan Azis advised all UB new students to be able to interpret love and care for the alma mater and the country. “Increasing love and concern for the alma mater and the country is not only in the form of praise, recognition, or use of attributes, but also the ability to take the form of criticism, input, and even dissatisfaction in order to improve the alma mater and the nation from time to time,” he said.
He also hopes that new students as academics must remain submit to the truth and follow every dynamic of lectures. “Be a student activist, but not limited to the participation of intra-campus organizations such as BEM and DPM or UKM, but the participation of the alma mater or breakthroughs in social society. Because the best diploma is the one whose assessment comes from the community itself, because of what we have thought about and fought for the community, “he concluded. [Irene/ Trans. Iir]
