In an effort to optimize the use of e-resources and support the improvement of the quality of scientific publications of UB Academicians, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Library in collaboration with IEEE held a sharing session entitled “Publishing Your Research & Innovation with IEEE: Choices & Procedures – Open Access Publishing Options with IEEE Journals” on Monday, (14/4/2025). The activity, which took place in Meeting Room 1, UB Library Building, 1st Floor, was attended by around 60 participants, consisting of Masters and Doctoral students, and lecturers from various faculties in UB.

This activity also received attention and support from the Head of UB Library, Prof. Dr. Iwan Permadi, S.H., M.Hum.

In his speech, he expressed his appreciation for the collaboration with IEEE which is expected to provide new insights for the academic community in understanding the international scientific publication process.

“It is very important for students and lecturers to make maximum use of e-resource collections, especially IEEE Xplore. This is to improve the quality of research and expand scientific networks through globally indexed publications,” said Prof. Iwan.

This event presented two speakers from IEEE, namely Mr. Alex Liu as IEEE Client Services Manager for the Southeast Asia region, and Ms. Rachel Berrington, Director of IEEE Client Services. Both provided comprehensive insights into the process and strategies for publication in international journals published by IEEE, especially those that are open access.

In his presentation, Mr. Alex Liu explained in detail the structure of journals under the auspices of IEEE as well as the process of writing and submitting scientific articles to these journals. He emphasized the importance of choosing a journal that is in accordance with the topic and scope of the research so that the chances of being accepted are greater. In addition, Alex also discussed the publication financing model, including the Article Processing Charges (APC) scheme, as well as strategies for obtaining institutional support or submitting fee waivers.

As part of the training, Alex also demonstrated the use of IEEE Xplore Digital Library to search for high-quality references. Features such as advanced search, topic grouping, and citation tracking were demonstrated live to help participants understand how to access and make the most of IEEE’s digital collections.

The session was continued by Ms. Rachel Berrington who discussed the importance of building an academic reputation through strategic publications. She explained how IEEE supports global knowledge dissemination, and provided practical tips to increase the visibility and impact of published scientific works. Rachel also shared case studies from several authors in the Southeast Asia region who have successfully penetrated highly reputable journals under IEEE.

During the question and answer session, participants seemed enthusiastic in asking various questions, ranging from writing techniques, publication ethics, to how to increase citations of published articles. The speakers also provided answers that were applicable and relevant to the needs of the participants.

Through this activity, UB Library demonstrated its commitment to continue support UB Academic Community in producing quality scientific works that are indexed internationally. It is hoped that similar training can continue to be held sustainably so that UB will excel in the field of global research and publication. (IHN/UB PR/ Trans. Iir).
