Community Capacity Building Through the Sekolah Orang Tua Hebat Program in Mojolangu

The Sekolah Orang Tua Hebat (SOTH) program, initiated by the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN), aims to enhance parents’ skills in child-rearing. This program seeks to optimize children’s growth and development, foster positive character building, and support efforts to reduce stunting rates as part of the Zero Stunting initiative.

In Mojolangu Village, Lowokwaru District, Malang City, SOTH is supported by the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya (FTUB), through its Community Service Program (PKM). This collaboration involves the PKM team from FTUB, SOTH’s partner organization BKB Melati, and the Mojolangu TP PKK.

The PKM FTUB implementation team is led by Ir. Rinawati P Handajani, MT, working alongside Dr. Ir. Lisa Dwi Wulandari, ST., MT., CIQaR, CIQnR, Dr. Ir. Damayanti Asikin, MT, Dr. Triandriani Mustikawati, ST., MT, and a group of PKM students.

The program emphasizes the importance of proper parenting, both physically and psychologically, to create a healthy and child-friendly environment. A supportive environment can stimulate children positively, enabling them to grow safely and comfortably.

The initial stage of the program began with coordination among the PKM FTUB team, partners, and student participants. This was followed by the preparation of teaching materials based on SOTH modules, which were developed with an architectural and environmental approach.

The program was implemented from April to June 2024, comprising a total of 14 face-to-face sessions. Initially scheduled twice weekly, the activities were adjusted as needed. Participants actively engaged in discussions and inquiries, creating a dynamic and enjoyable learning atmosphere.

Upon completion of the program, participants who met the graduation criteria were awarded certificates during a graduation ceremony held on July 27, 2024. The event, conducted at the Mojolangu Village Hall, was attended by local officials, the PKM FTUB team, and community leaders. Students also played an active role in preparing for this event.

As a final product, the PKM FTUB team developed an interactive playbook titled Story of the Heart. This book is designed to strengthen the bond between parents and children while introducing architectural concepts and the importance of environmental care.

The book contains engaging and easy-to-understand elements for children. Besides serving as an educational tool, it also acts as a medium for fostering closer family relationships through shared activities.

Through this program, the Mojolangu community gained a better understanding of effective parenting. The SOTH program also encouraged the creation of physical environments that support children’s optimal growth and development.

The success of this program serves as a tangible example of a multisectoral collaboration with a positive impact. It is hoped that this initiative can serve as a model for other regions seeking to implement similar programs.

The Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Brawijaya’s commitment to supporting community service activities reflects the active role of educational institutions in realizing sustainable development.
