Lecturers of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) carried out community service activities by holding an introduction to the actuary profession for students and teachers of senior high schools (SMA) and Madrasah Aliyah (MA) in Banyuwangi Regency. This activity is part of the 2021-2025 community service road map for the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UB and aims to increase students’ understanding and interest in the actuary profession and actuarial science.
The team consisting of Dra. Endang Wahyu H., M.Si., Prof. Dr. Isnani Darti, M.Si., Dr. dr. Umu Sa’adah, M.Sc., Mila Kurniawaty, S.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., and Fery Widhiatmoko, S.Pd., M.Sc have carried out this activity with enthusiasm. They hope that through this event, students and teachers in Banyuwangi Regency can better understand what an actuary is and get to know more about actuarial science.
This community service activity does not only focus on increasing students’ knowledge of the actuary profession, but also the importance of understanding the profile of graduates in the field of study that will be taken in tertiary institutions and the perspectives of work that will be faced in the future.
Actuary, as one of the professions that is increasingly being discussed by the people of Indonesia, is still not well known by most people. Therefore, through this introductory activity, it is hoped that students and teachers can better understand what the actuary profession really is and its benefits in various fields.
In this introduction to the actuary profession, the community service team from the Mathematics Department of FMIPA UB conveyed various interesting and important information about actuaries and actuarial science. They also provide motivation and clear views about further studies in higher education, especially in the Undergraduate Program in Actuarial Science at FMIPA UB.
Endang Wahyu H., M.Sc., a member of the community service team said, “We hope that this activity can increase the interest of High School students in Banyuwangi Regency to choose careers as actuaries in the future. In addition, we also hope that these students are interested in continuing their education in the Undergraduate Program in Actuarial Science at FMIPA UB, where they will gain the knowledge and skills needed to become competent actuaries.”
With this introduction to the actuary profession, it is hoped that there will be an increase in students’ interest in and understanding of the actuary profession and actuarial science. Mathematics teachers are also expected to be able to further motivate their students to pursue careers in this field and provide better guidance in learning in schools.
The Mathematics Department of FMIPA UB is committed to continuing to hold educational activities like this in order to provide a broader understanding of various promising professions and support students’ academic growth in the Banyuwangi Regency area. (EWH/UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
