Under the Social-Environmental Department, the Faculty of Engineering, University of Brawijaya (FTUB) student body (BEM), the students planted Mangrove Tree Seeds. They also cleaned Gatra Beach in Tambak Rejo Village, Sumbermanjing Wetan District, Malang Regency, East Java, on Saturday, 18 March 2023.
This activity aims to preserve marine ecosystems and increase the sense of concern for FTUB students for the coastal environment.
The planting of mangrove tree seedlings begins with debriefing and providing material by guides from Tiga Warna Clungup Mangrove Conservation (CMC Tiga Warna) so that students can plant mangrove tree seedlings correctly. Also, through this provision, students gain knowledge that is not obtained in college.
After planting mangrove trees, students carry out beach cleaning activities by forming several teams, which are placed at specific points to clean up trash. Each team will collect and record what trash has been found. Apart from cleaning the beach, BEM of the Faculty of Engineering also donated two signs containing invitations to maintain beach cleanliness which was installed on Gatra Beach and Tiga Warna Beach.
“Hopefully, with this activity, FTUB students will love more and preserve the environment, especially marine and coastal ecosystems,” said Muhammad Farrel Nikkola Putra ‘Aqila, the chief executive of the activity.
Manager of Research, Planning, and Development and archivist of the Sendang Biru Bhakti Alam Foundation (Manager of CMC Tiga Warna), Arik Anggara, appreciated the student activities for helping to preserve the coastal environment.
“We are very grateful for the contribution of planting 60 mangrove seedlings which is also a conservation effort, and we are also grateful for the sign to educate visitors to be responsible for their waste,” said Arik Anggara.
