Muthi’ah Raudhatul Jannah, the best graduate from the Water Resources Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Brawijaya (UB), has a high concern for the environment. She is involved in the River.idn community which focuses on cleaning up plastic waste in rivers in Malang City.
Muthi’ah began her involvement in this community through a lecturer research team. She participated in open recruitment and underwent training for two months before joining the research team. Initially, this team focused on microplastic research in the Bali Sea, but then expanded its focus to cleaning up waste in rivers in Malang.
“We clean up waste in the Metro River and Kasin River, as well as clean drainage channels. We also sort waste based on the type of plastic and dispose of it at the Supit Urang TPU,” said Muthi’ah.

Muthi’ah and her team use special equipment to protect themselves during the cleaning activities. They also pay attention to their safety by choosing the right time to do the cleaning activities.
“We usually do the cleaning activities on Saturdays and Sundays, so that it doesn’t interfere with my college activities,” said Muthi’ah.
She added, for our own safety, usually the river cleaning activities are carried out when the river’s water flow is not strong.
“If the river discharge is still strong, we will change the day. If not, we will wait until the afternoon or in the morning,” she said.
With her concern and commitment to the environment, Muthi’ah is an example for other students to get involved in social and environmental activities.
Meanwhile, when asked about how she divides her time between studying and other activities, Muthi’ah still prioritizes her studies.
To help facilitate her efforts, Muthi’ah made a list of priorities that must be done first.
“For river cleaning activities with the River.idn community, this is usually done on Saturdays and Sundays so it doesn’t interfere my college activities,” she said. (OKY/UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
