
Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Ir. Siti Nurbaya Bakar, M.Sc gave a public lecture at the Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKK MABA) Doctoral and Masters Programs or Education Orientation (ORDIK) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Jakarta Campus for the 2024/2025 Academic Year. This activity was attended by 422 new students, at the Royal Kuningan Hotel, Jakarta, Saturday (08/24/2024).
She delivered the material “Environmental and Forestry Development 2045”. According to her, forestry issues that have emerged since 2003 are deforestation and biodiversity.
“Both of these things have an impact on community sensitivity. This social issue is interesting to explore in theses and dissertations. Namely about how to manage access, how environmental and forestry crimes, how to provide services and complaints about environmental threats, and environmental recovery,” she explained.
She continued, the new environmental paradigm in Indonesia with various problems, it is necessary to understand what the key problems are Intervention is needed with regulations, supervision, law enforcement, inventory and monitoring, outreach, and problem handling.
“Environmental policies and environmental and forestry management really require scientific-based, and studying empirical conditions or evidence-based. So, the steps that we take with the articulation of interests must also be arranged between the interests of the regional government, private interests, and NGO interests. This can be an inspiration for theses and dissertations,” he said.

Also present at this event was the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, M.AP. He said that the number of entrepreneurs in Indonesia is still at 3.47 percent, far from the ratio of entrepreneurs in developed countries which is around 12 percent. In fact, the number of entrepreneurs can indicate a strong level of productivity and innovation, which can increase a country’s competitiveness.
In line with Prof. Siti Nurbaya, Prof. Muhadjir encouraged UB’s postgraduate students to immediately plan research, especially in the environmental field.
“Indonesia is part of the ring of fire, don’t expect there to be no disasters. Various areas that we have built have been destroyed by earthquakes, eruptions, tidal floods, or landslides. There needs to be a dialogue between lecturers and students regarding research or action from the theories that have been given, because the core of Masters and Doctoral students is research,” explained the man who also serves as Chairman of UB Board of Trustees.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of the Consultative Assembly (MPR), Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Fadel Muhammad conveyed online several visions in facing the Golden Indonesia, namely citizen income that is equal to other developed countries, economic transformation, and transformation of governance.
