The Batch 7 Campus Teaching (Kampus Mengajar) Program at SMP Negeri 59 Batam, which was attended by Eiko Farah Diva Julen, a student majoring in Information Technology Education from the Faculty of Computer Science batch of 2021, faced various challenges during its implementation. This program assignment will be carried out on 19 February-9 June 2024 (19/02-09/06/24). Nevertheless, this program has succeeded in having a positive impact on schools which are still in this stage of development.
Eiko told the PRASETYA Online team the reason he chose Batam as the destination city for the Campus Teaching program was because he wanted to return to his hometown and meet his parents, he was placed at SMP Negeri 59 Batam which is located in Bukit Permata Housing Complex, Tembesi Village, Sagulung District, Batam City. This school was founded on July 18 2018 and stopped operating due to construction problems.
“The reason why I took the campus teaching program in Batam was because I wanted to return to my original home, namely Batam, and meet my parents,” said Eiko.
“The initial choice of destination city was Malang, but because my parents wanted me to go home and do an internship in Batam, I complied,” she said.
SMP Negeri 59 Batam has limited facilities with only four classrooms for more than 400 students, causing learning to be carried out in three shifts from 07.30 to 17.00.
“We have difficulty in preparing work programs because of limited facilities and time. This school also doesn’t have a computer lab, science lab, proper canteen, or even a prayer room,” said Eiko.
However, the enthusiasm of the Campus Teaching team remains high. They designed and implemented various work programs, including creating reading corners in each class, revitalizing wall panels, creating literacy slogans, and holding a Lit-Num Festival to commemorate National Education Day. In addition, they also introduced technology through extracurricular bulletins and making QR Code-based attendance.
“The entire work program that had been planned was carried out well and in accordance with the initial plan, although work was constrained by time because the school had three learning shifts. One of our flagship programs is the Lit-Num Festival which aims to improve students’ literacy and numeracy skills,” explained the FILKOM student.
The Campus Teaching Team, especially Eiko, stated that they experienced many interesting things while undergoing this work program.
“One of the interesting things I have seen is that the children in the class always ask for more time to study together. They said that studying with campus teaching teacher, learning would be more exciting and fun,” she said.
She also explained why her learning method was very interesting for students. She said that the ice breaking method was effective in attracting students’ interest in learning.
“I prefer to use gamification-based learning media and in the learning process students don’t just memorize the material, but must understand it, supported by appropriate teaching media. For example, applying the ice breaking method by using a word wall on the website. We also apply the method of imitating a poster using Canva and children are asked to find the elements themselves on Canva. Whoever imitates it the most and completes it the fastest will get a prize,” said Eiko.
Despite facing various difficulties, feedback from the school has been very positive.
“The school feels very happy and helped in many ways. “Many educators were pessimistic at first, but with Campus Teaching team, they felt more helped in terms of teaching in class, helping with administrative activities, and in organizing school events,” she said.
The experience of participating in the Teaching Campus program made a deep impression on her. She was very honored by the experience of serving the land of his birth.
“I am very happy to have had this extraordinary experience. I not only provide knowledge to students, but also gain valuable knowledge from teachers at SMP Negeri 59 Batam,” she added.
She hopes that the work program that has been implemented can bring meaningful memories and benefits to teaching staff and students at SMP Negeri 59 Batam.
“Hopefully the Campus Teaching program can continue to be implemented in the future to create better Indonesian education,” concluded Eiko. (Dea/UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
