Supporting the Development of Sustainable Livestock Business through Community Service Program

Tuban, August 1, 2024 – A community service program led by Prof. Ifar Subagiyo and his team, involving KKN students, actively participated in Sumberjo Village, Widang District, Tuban Regency. This community service initiative, which involved 20 students, focused on assisting young community leaders in livestock groups, specifically collaborating with a group known as the “Gembalang Livestock Group.”

Nurul Priyanto, S.Pd., a young community leader, emphasized the great potential in Sumberjo Village for developing livestock businesses. However, he also noted the lack of support from higher education institutions. “The potential in Sumberjo Village is immense for developing livestock businesses, but unfortunately, there has been a lack of guidance from universities. With this program, farmers and livestock breeders in Sumberjo Village gain a lot of new insights, such as utilizing the abundant rice straw as a fiber source for ruminant feed, using various legume leaves as a protein source for ruminant feed, and other potentials,” said Nurul.

One of the programs scheduled by the KKN students was a workshop on silage production. Silage can become a profitable business for farmers and livestock breeders. The students emphasized that for the forage feed business, farmers do not need to own livestock. They can run a business selling fresh forage and preserved forage in the form of silage. The silage introduced to the breeders was made in barrels as mobile silos, which are easy to move and can be reused to make more silage.

This program aims to provide intensive guidance and training to farmers, ensuring they acquire new skills and knowledge to improve their livestock management practices. This initiative is expected to empower farmers, allowing them to utilize local resources and improve their economic well-being.

Collaboration with the “Gembalang Livestock Group” marks a significant step towards sustainable livestock farming in Sumberjo Village. Practical training and educational sessions on efficient feed utilization and business management are expected to provide long-term benefits to the local farming community.

By providing the necessary support and knowledge, this program hopes to build a more productive and independent farming community in Sumberjo Village, contributing to the overall development and welfare of the region.
