UB Students Examine the Influence of Food to the Psychology of Chronic Kidney Patients

UB Students Research the Effect of Food on the Psychology of Chronic Kidney Patients

Collaboration of students from the Faculty of Medicine (FK), Faculty of Health Sciences (FIKES), and Agribusiness UB Kediri created research entitled “Perception of food beliefs and Psychological Resilience on Quality of Life in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients on Hemodialysis”. They are Hanifah Hasna Thufaila (Nutrition Science), Annisa Fitri (Nutrition Science), Noval Ramadhani (Nutrition Science), Sandrina Aulia Sari (Agribusiness UB Kediri), and Tourmalina Citra Adriyanti (Medicine).

This research aims to help patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) choose and determine what to consume, so that it can have a good effect on their psychological condition.

The Team Leader, Hanifah Hasna Thufaila said that CKD patients have to undergo a routine process that is not the same as most people, namely hemodialysis. In other words, hemodialysis is performed to replace damaged kidney function, which must be done routinely throughout life.

“Of course, this is a challenge for patients to continue their lives from various aspects,” said Hanifah.

On the other hand, the food we consume has an influence on hormonal reactions and feelings. Unfortunately, when the body is no longer able to function as before, what was previously a habit must slowly but surely change. This can be a finding, whether with these changes a patient can survive in a healthy and safe psychological condition.

The research was carried out by examining and digging up information using in-depth interviews directly with patients

This research is a form of the team’s attention regarding this phenomenon. The research was carried out by examining and gathering information using in-depth interviews directly with patients. Patients are also motivated through education to increase their understanding of food, menu and exercise recommendations that are right for them.

“The hope is that this research can provide a basis for developing more targeted and effective psychological interventions for chronic kidney failure patients on hemodialysis,” said Hanifah.

By exploring patients’ perceptions of food and levels of psychological resilience, Hanifah and the team can identify appropriate strategies to improve their adaptation to the lifestyle changes required to manage their health conditions.

“It is also hoped that the results of this research can make a valuable contribution to the development of more holistic and patient-oriented health policies to improve their overall quality of life,” said Tourmalina.

This research team is part of the Social Humanities Research Student Creativity Program (PKM-RSH). Under the guidance of lecturer, Dr. Fajar Ari Nugroho, S.Gz., M.Kes, their research was successfully funded by the Directorate of Higher Education to further participate in the National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS).
