UB Students Invent a Rehabilitation Robot Design for Post-Stroke Patients

PRESS RELEASE
August 7th, 2021
No. 83/VIII/2021

Stroke incidence in Indonesia has the second highest mortality rate in Southeast Asia, reaching 193.3 deaths out of 100,000 cases and has a DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years) number of 3.38 years. (Venketasubramanian et al., 2017). The condition of post-stroke patients is often accompanied by the occurrence of weakening of the muscles on some sides of the body. Most occur in the legs, especially the lower legs.

Based on that case, the collaboration between students of the Faculty of Engineering (FT) and the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Brawijaya (UB), creates a Rehabilitation Robot Design as a Solution for Joint Contractures and Lower Leg Muscle Atrophy for Post-Stroke Patients. They are Dean Passaddhi (FT’18), Irfan Nadhif Musthofa (FT’18), Anak Agung Sagung Gede Paramitha Wardhana (FT’19), Faisal Mohammad Rifqi Aqil (FK’18), and Nina Latifatus Sya’adah (FK’ 20).

This rehabilitation robot has a control system via smartphone that is integrated with IoT. The movement that can be done is lifting the thigh and bending the knee. Movement control can be through smartphone equipped with movement parameters with the number of movements in one therapy and the angle of movement that will be used in therapy. The movement of the tool is monitored directly through the user’s smartphone.

This robot is made of aluminum which is lightweight and designed not to take up too much space. The advantages of this robot are practical use, portable, can be used at home, and control via smartphone.

It is expected that this innovation will be present to assist the recovery therapy of post-stroke patients who want to restore motion function due to the weakening of the muscles in the legs, especially the low legs.

Under the guidance of an Electrical Engineering lecturer, Raden Arief Setyawan, ST., MT, this robot innovation has received funding assistance from the Ministry of Education and Culture in the Student Creativity Program in the field of Copyright (PKM-KC) and will take part in the PIMNAS XXXIV selection in August.
