UB Students Give Education to Elementary School Students Regarding the Danger of Rat

Students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Universitas Brawijaya (FKH UB) provide education about the dangers of rats as the carriers of infectious diseases to 45 elementary school students at MIS Al Huda, Pucak Wangi Village, Babat District, Lamongan Regency, Wednesday (18/8/2021).

This socialization was attended by fourth grade students (13 students), fifth grade (16 students), and sixth grade (16 students) and was under the guidance of drh. Shelly Kusumarini R., M.Si and drh. Aulia Firmawati, M. Vet.

Farida Puspita said that the socialization was carried out for school children since they are susceptible to be infected with leptospirosis.

“Children are susceptible to infection with leptospirosis when playing in water, especially during the rainy season,” said Farida.

She added that in general, MIS Al Huda students did not know about leptospirosis. They also do not know if rats can transmit disease to humans.

“It is expected that after this socialization activity, students can be aware of leptospirosis transmission through rats and know the clinical symptoms and how to prevent and control it,” she said.

In her presentation, Farida said that the main source of transmission of leptospirosis is rats. Humans are often infected with leptospirosis through rat urine that pollutes the environment.

The presence of rats in the community often has a negative impact.

In her socialization, Farida also explained how to have clean live behavior so that the environment where they live is not made into a nest by rats.

“It is hoped that this socialization activity can be carried out sustainably so that students can socialize and interact directly with the community. Socialization activities at MIS Al Huda can be used by FKH UB students to share knowledge with MIS Al Huda students,” she said. (FRD/Humas UB/ Trans. Iir).
