Five students of Universitas Brawijaya (UB) succeeded in breeding Axolotl to get exporting offer from several countries such as Arabia, Malaysia, India, China.
Daffa Khairan (FPIK), Brillian Prastica (FPIK), Muhammad Setiawan Gusmi (FPIK), Rere Tara Mahameru (FPIK) and Ali Akbar (FILKOM) under the guidance of Mochammad Fattah, S.Pi., M.Si., mam, developed Axolotl to be able to adapt and live in an environment with Indonesian parameters named AQUAXO.
Daffa said Axolotl has a unique shape, it is like a dragon at a first glance, but has a smiling face shape so it is often known as “Smiling Salamander”.
These animals are also used in scientific research because they have a unique ability to regenerate almost all parts of their body.
“Behind this promising potential, the Axolotl is difficult to live in Indonesia since the parameters for spawning it are different from most other fish. This is undeniable because this Mexican endemic animal has a habitat in Xochimilco Lake with a height of 2,240 meters above sea level so that it has different water parameters, especially at water temperature, “said Daffa as the team leader.
The AQUAXO team has succeeded in cultivating this endemic animal. Even in one production can produce hundreds of eggs.
AQUAXO has a vision to be able to preserve and develop this unique commodity by using the technology they developed, namely the water closed loop chiller system.
The axolotl which AQUAXO developed has a stronger resistance. This is because Axolotl has successfully adapted to existing parameters in Indonesia, so it is very possible to have this Toothless in your home.
“In addition, the treatment is quite easy to make the Axolotl a cool choice to have at home,” said Daffa.
In the process of caring at home, Axolotl is placed in a glass aquarium using a Water Chiller which functions to manipulate temperature parameters because Axolotl requires temperatures around 18-20 degrees for spawning and 16-28 degrees for life span.
During the enlargement period, the temperature will slowly increase so that the Axolotl can adapt to tropical parameters, especially in Indonesia. It can be said that AQUAXO Axolotl breeding has a high quality compared to the Axolotl outside because it is able to adapt to tropical temperatures even up to 28 degrees.
“With the presence of AQUAXO, it is hoped that it will be able to provide new variations for ornamental fish commodities in Indonesia as well as penetrate the export market in order to raise the potential of Indonesian fisheries,” added Daffa.
Daffa added that the demand for AQUAXO is high both from the domestic market and from abroad.
“From the domestic batch 1, it was immediately sold out and the profit reached 9 million rupiah. From abroad, there have been requests for 1000+ axolotls to export,” said Daffa.
