A student of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Brawijaya (FH UB), Shofa Umrotul Hasanah won a silver medal in the fourth International Olympiad on Financial Security competition, themed “Financial Security”. The Olympiad on Financial Security is a scientific competition that specifically discusses Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Combating Financial Terrorism (CFT). This competition was attended by participants from 36 countries, including Bahrain, China, Peru, Argentina, India, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa.

The competition series started from the Preliminary Round to the Qualifying Round online since February 14, 2024. Meanwhile, the final round took place offline from (30/9-4/10/2024) in Sirius, Sochi, Russia.

Shofia said that in the preparation and implementation of the competition there were technical and physical obstacles.

“During the competition, I had a sinus infection and had to bring a lot of tissues. My leg was also injured because I fell down the stairs at one of the venues,” she said with a laugh. However, despite facing various challenges, Shofa was still able to perform optimally and achieve brilliant results.

Shofa’s experience competing in Russia also broke negative stereotypes about the country.

“When I got there, it turned out that Russia was very beautiful, and the people were friendly. This is completely different from the stigma that we often hear,” said Shofa.

They were also very happy to be able to make friends from various countries, which enriched their international experience.

“There are things that have not been taught on campus, but it is a challenge to explore more deeply and I did not expect to be able to reach the Final Stage and get a silver medal. Being able to reach Russia is also very unexpected,” said Shofa.

With this success, Shofa has proven that Indonesian students are able to compete at the international level and contribute to relevant global issues, such as financial security.

Shofa hopes that in the future there will be more delegates from Indonesia, especially from UB, who will participate in this event. She hopes that the knowledge gained during the competition can be applied for the progress of Indonesia, especially in creating a safer and more transparent financial system.

“Hopefully, Indonesian representatives can be more lively in the coming years. Don’t be afraid to try any opportunity, because we will not know which door will open,” said Shofa. (dilla/OKY/UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
