Mangku Purnomo, Ph.D is Inaugurated by Universitas Brawijaya as a Professor in the Field of Agricultural Sociology

Universitas Brawijaya (UB) inaugurates Mangku Purnomo, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D as a Professor in the field of Agricultural Sociology. He is the 31st active professor from the Faculty of Agriculture (FP) and the 174th active professor at Universitas Brawijaya and the 328th professor out of all professors produced by Universitas Brawijaya. This inauguration was held on Sunday (13/08/2023) at Samantha Krida Building offline.

In his scientific oration, Prof. Mangku Purnomo, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D gave a presentation entitled “Increasing Agricultural Development with a Progressive Techno-scientific Approach”.

After the reformation, technocratic and scientific approaches tend to be abandoned in the formulation of development policies, including in the agricultural sector. As a result, policies become inaccurate where rural areas still contribute the highest rates of poverty, stunting and illiteracy.

In this case the approach used is Progressive Techno-Scientific (TSP), which is a process of reconstructing popular concepts in agricultural development such as regional concepts, movement levels, actors, groups, business institutions, and farmer/extension learning concepts.

“Progressive Techno-scientific (TSP) allows the main concepts used in agricultural development to become ‘alive’ concepts that continue to adapt to the socio-economic dynamics of society so that they are always relevant to use,” explained Prof. Mangku.

By reforming the definitions of the main concepts in agricultural development by using the latest developments in social theory, the strategy becomes more relevant to the dynamics of society. Accuracy occurs because the main concepts become ‘alive’ and ‘dynamic’ concepts in accordance with the development of science.

“There are three stages of Progressive Techno-Scientific (TSP), namely concept reconstruction, concept modeling, and implementation strategy at the site scale. These three stages are very useful for ensuring that the development program becomes more accurate and efficient, because it lands accurately on the target community,” he explained.

This accuracy will be the key to the success of an agricultural development program.

Prof. Mangku Purnomo, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D, was born in Magetan on April 20, 1977, completed his bachelor’s degree at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Brawijaya, master’s degree at Bogor Agricultural Institute, and graduated doctoral degree at Gottingen University Germany in the field of Geosciences.
