LPPM Holds Workshop on Increasing Literacy in Predatory Journal

The Brawijaya University’s Research and Quality Assurance Institute (LPPM UB) held a workshop with the theme “Identifying Avoiding a Predatory, Hijacked, and Cloned Journal Publishing” at F Building, 7th Floor, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) (22/02). This activity was carried out to increase the understanding of UB academic community in choosing a good journal as a place to publish scientific work.

Report from the head of the Center for Scientific Publications and Journal Resilience (PPIKJ), Dhiana Puspitawati, SH., LLM., Ph.D, said that this activity is very important since scientific publications are related to the reputation of the campus.

“When our scientific work is published in a predatory journal, the work cannot be used to increase the rank and calculate the Main Performance Indicator,” he explained.

Currently, it is not only predatory journals, he continued, there are also cloned journals which make the owner of the work feel cheated because they have invested time, thought and money but the journal is a cloned or fake journal.

Head of LPPM UB, Prof. Luchman Hakim, S.Sc., M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D., in his speech revealed that the data held by LPPM still had errors in submitting to journals. These mistakes are usually made to catch up on time, so you want to publish them quickly.

“Sometimes in published scientific works there are still words in Indonesian, even though they are in international journals,” he said.

He continued, for now the most important thing to avoid this is to build a good research ecosystem. What are the obligations of senior researchers, professors and supervisors to know better about publications?

“This activity is part of building good literacy regarding proper publication in journals,” he explained.

The resource person at this workshop was Dato’ professor Dr. H. Kamaruzaman Jusoff, Ph.D. from Malaya University who explained about Identifying Avoiding A Predatory, Hijacked, and Cloned Journal Publishing with Special Emphasis on Migration Letters, Prof. Dodi Wirawan Irwanto, SE., M.Com., Ph.D., explained about Identifying Avoiding A Predatory, Hijacked, and Cloned Journal Publishing in the Social field, and Prof. Akhmad Sabarudin, S.Si., M.Sc., Dr.Sc., explained about Identifying Avoiding A Predatory, Hijacked, and Cloned Journal Publishing in the field of Exacts.
