Universitas Brawijaya Library once again held a Library Class event themed “Qualitative Data Analysis Training with NVIVO: Advanced Techniques and Best Practices”, Wednesday, (31/7/2024) to provide in-depth insight and practical skills to participants in utilizing NVIVO software optimally, especially in qualitative research that often involves complex and diverse data.
This event was held in Meeting Room 1, UB Library Building, and was attended by postgraduate students who were interested in studying qualitative data analysis.
Library Class is one of the facilities provided by Universitas Brawijaya Library to help students who are having difficulty in writing final assignments such as undergraduate theses, theses and dissertations. In addition, Library Class is also intended for lecturers who are working on research. UB Library Librarians will be happy to assist UB academics in solving problems experienced when writing final assignments and research.
The training started at 08.30 WIB with the main speaker, Ir. Heri Prayitno, an expert in qualitative data analysis and an experienced NVIVO user. In this training, participants were guided to understand and master advanced techniques in using NVIVO, a software designed to help analyze qualitative data in depth and systematically.
Ir. Heri Prayitno began the training by explaining data coding techniques, which are a crucial step in qualitative analysis. This coding includes the process of identifying themes, patterns, or categories from the data that has been collected. Participants were invited to understand how NVIVO can facilitate grouping and sorting data based on certain codes, making it easier to find relationships between categories and themes that emerge.
Furthermore, the training focused on visualizing the results of the analysis. Ir. Heri showed how to use the visualization feature in NVIVO to map and present data in the form of graphs, diagrams, and conceptual models. This visualization helps researchers see patterns and trends in their qualitative data, making it easier to convey research findings more clearly and convincingly.
This training also discussed the best strategies for managing complex qualitative data. Ir. Heri provided tips on how to organize data for easy access and analysis. This includes techniques for storing, organizing, and tidying up data, as well as how to integrate multiple data sources for more comprehensive analysis.
With a systematic and targeted approach, this training is expected to improve the analytical skills of participants, enable them to manage qualitative data more efficiently, and produce more meaningful and impactful research findings.
The participants, who were mostly postgraduate students from various study programs, showed high enthusiasm throughout the training. They had the opportunity to do hands-on exercises using NVIVO, they were invited to process research data that they brought themselves. An interactive question and answer session was also an important part of this training, allowing participants to discuss the challenges they faced in their research.
The event closed with a message from the speaker emphasizing the importance of qualitative data analysis skills for postgraduate students, especially in facing increasingly complex academic demands. Ir. Heri Prayitno hopes that participants can apply the knowledge gained in this training to strengthen the quality of their research.
It is hoped that this kind of activity will not only improve technical skills, but also enrich students’ insights and experiences in the world of research. [UB PR/ Trans. Iir]
