The increasing carbon emissions in the earth’s atmosphere have a negative impact on the environment and society, including in Indonesia. The Global Carbon Project in 2022 places Indonesia as a country with a carbon production of 700 thousand tons per year. This condition is further exacerbated by the lack of public awareness of waste management.
Departing from this condition, a number of Universitas Brawijaya students from various faculties have shown their commitment to the earth. Through the Sobat Bumi Action, the students who are also part of the PF Scholars Universitas Brawijaya held several activities in Umbul Legi Hamlet, Jabung District, and Bajul Mati Beach, Malang Regency.
According to Dio Pratama as the Project Manager of Sobat Bumi Action UB 2024, this activity is a real contribution from Pertamina through Sobat Bumi to create a greener future. “I, along with my fellow Awardees of Pertamina Sobat Bumi Scholarship and also assisted by Volunteers, are committed to being able to move and have a real impact on the environment. There will be no second planet other than Earth,” said this student of the Faculty of Law.

The series of activities of Brawijaya Muda Green Action consisted of increasing awareness and the ability to process waste into useful goods, a green lifestyle campaign, providing EM4 fluid and fertilizer production, and providing trash bins at several points. Meanwhile, at Bajulmati Beach, these students planted 200 mangrove seedlings to support this beach as a location for education and conservation.

“Furthermore, we also held a Nature School for Sobat Bumi and other participants from the community around the beach to get updates on environmental issues, including Blue Carbon,” he said. There was also a Beach Clean Up to clean up the location around the beach.
“In Bajulmati too, we released 375 hatchlings with the Bajulmati Sea Turtle Conservation community, the goal is to increase the number of turtle populations that have decreased due to hunting, climate change and habitat destruction,” added Dio.
From this series of activities, Dio hopes that students can become agents of change in the future. “If we are not the pioneers of the current movement, then who else should we expect and wait for to start,” he concluded. (dio/VQ/ UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
