Collaboration between USAID IUWASH and Communication Science, Held Climate Change Communication Training

USAID IUWASH Tangguh together with the Department of Communication Science Universitas Brawijaya (UB) held a Climate Change Communication Training on (23/8-24/8/2023). This training aims to provide Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) staff with the necessary skills and techniques to simplify this information, making it more relevant and attractive to the people of East Java.

Attended by BMKG staff from the East Java Climatology and Meteorology Station as participants, this training is expected to become an interactive learning platform on how to convey climate change information to the wider community.

In this training, USAID IUWASH Tangguh and the Department of Communication Sciences Universitas Brawijaya worked together to present materials that combined scientific aspects of climate change with effective communication techniques.

“We see the importance of collaboration between scientists and communicators in efforts to disseminate information related to climate change that is easily understood by the public,” said Cheerli, National Coordinator Media and Outreach from USAID IUWASH Tangguh.

Lecturers from the Department of Communication Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya who were present as speakers shared their insights and communication techniques to convey complex information in an interesting and easy-to-understand way for the public.

“We believe that with the right approach, we can bridge the gap in understanding about climate change,” said Diyah Ayu Amalia Avina, M.Si, Head of the Communication Science Study Program, FISIP UB.

Avina said that one of the biggest challenges in climate change communication is the gap in understanding between scientists and the general public.

“The information presented is often technical and difficult to digest,” said Avina.

USAID IUWASH Tangguh is committed to increasing access to drinking water and sanitation in vulnerable urban areas. Through various programs, including collaboration with educational institutions such as Universitas Brawijaya, USAID seeks to support Indonesia in achieving the target of the Sustainable Development Goals. This training is also part of that effort, emphasizing the importance of effective communication in promoting understanding and action on climate change.

This training is a collaborative initiatiation between the Department of Communication Science and USAID. Both parties hope that this collaboration will produce more programs and activities that support climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts in Indonesia. (*/OKY/UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
