Research Collaboration between FILKOM and NTNU: Developing Honeywords to Prevent Data Leakage

Universitas Brawijaya continues to expand international research collaboration through the Researcher Fellowship (RF), a program that facilitates research collaboration between FILKOM and international research groups. This time, FILKOM collaborated with the eHealth and Welfare Security (eHWS) research group from the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) to develop research in the field of information security, especially on strategies for preventing password data leaks through the honeywords method.

In this research collaboration, FILKOM sent three main researchers, namely M. Ali Fauzi, S.Kom., M.Kom., Ph.D., Eko Sakti Pramukantoro, S.Kom., M.Kom., Ph.D., and Mahendra Data, S.Kom., M.Kom., Ph.D. This collaboration focuses on a research project entitled “Honeywords Generation Strategies: A Survey” which aims to identify and develop new strategies in generating honeywords, a technique in password management that helps detect hacking attempts through fake passwords that resemble the user’s real password.

As part of this program, a delegation of FILKOM UB researchers visited NTNU in Gjøvik, Norway, for eight days (20/10/2024-28/10/2024). During this visit, the researchers were involved in various activities that strengthened the relationship between the two institutions, including internal seminars and presentations to share the latest research findings. In addition, to get feedback from NTNU experts, this activity is also expected to introduce the research results of both institutions to a wider audience.

Additional activities carried out during the visit to NTNU included in-depth discussions with members of the eHealth and Welfare Security (eHWS) research group, including Prof. Bian Yang as the head of the research group. In addition, researchers from FILKOM UB also held collaborative discussions with Prof. Patrick Bours from the Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory (NBL) to explore the potential for joint research in the field of biometrics. Another activity that was also carried out was a comparative study to the Norwegian Cyber Range at NTNU as one of the leading cybersecurity training centers in Norway. The FILKOM UB research team also had the opportunity to discuss with a number of researchers from various research groups at NTNU, such as Color Lab, Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience (Cisar), System Security Research Group, and Multidisciplinary Research Group on Privacy and Data Protection (MR PET).

As the chief executive, Ali said that this collaboration is a significant step for FILKOM in developing innovation in the field of data security, as well as opening up opportunities for further research involving more researchers and students.

“With collaborative initiatives such as the Researcher Fellowship, FILKOM’s role in the global research network will be further strengthened and will continue to provide real contributions to the development of information security technology,” explained Ali. (maf/rr/UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
