Don’t be Shy to Ask, Before Dealing with Journalists

Marketing & PR Manager of Jatim Park Group, Titik S. Ariyanto, SE., MM. had the opportunity to be a Guest Lecturer in front of Master of Communication Science students of FISIP UB. She was present to share her experience as a public relations officer in the tourism sector with the theme of Crisis and Risk Management in the Tourism Industry, Thursday (6/13/2024).

One of the tips she shared was how to deal with media crews in the midst of a crisis. “Don’t be ashamed to ask, before meeting journalists. Ask what they might ask during the interview,” she said.

Titik said, after knowing the list of questions that journalists might ask, then you can continue by exploring sources of information in the field and even ask the CEO for consideration regarding the answers that will be issued. This was her experience when facing the issue of Jatim Park going bankrupt due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis.

“When it went viral on TikTok that Jatim Park was bankrupt, the journalists wanted to interview me, I asked the CEO first what I should convey,” she said.

In his presentation, Titik explained the various risks that tourist destinations could face, such as technical obstacles to rides, natural disasters, and game accidents. In addition, the risk communication carried out by Jatim Park Group includes information related to the closure of tourist destinations, weather conditions, and rides that are being serviced.

In addition, she also explained Jatim Park’s strategy for rebranding after the pandemic. He said he held a media gathering for local and national journalists and information transparency. Meanwhile, the image recovery strategy includes launching a new branding “Liburan? #JatimParkAJA“, CSR activities and promotions through social media.

Also present at this activity was the Head of the Master of Communication Study Program, Maulina Pia Wulandari, S.Sos, M.Kom, Ph.D. This lecturer, an alumnus of Newcastle University, emphasized the importance of the Tourism Communication course which has been at Universitas Brawijaya since 2004, as a response to the tourism potential in Batu City, East Java.

Risk and crisis management in the tourism industry must be formulated carefully and adjusted to the character and scale of its impact.
