Initiating Environmental Education with Organic Waste Management

Community Service (PKM) students from Group 8 of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Brawijaya held a socialization regarding organic waste management in Sumberkerto Hamlet, Plaosan Village, Wonosari District, Malang Regency, Saturday (07/13).

The Organic Waste Management Socialization and Training Program is one of the main programs carried out by the PKM Group 8 FH UB student group, Sumberkerto Hamlet, with the main objective of increasing community understanding and skills in managing organic waste into useful fertilizer. This socialization was attended by the Head of Sumberkerto Hamlet, Mrs. Lia Kurnia Sari, and the Director of the Plaosan Village-Owned Enterprise, Mr. Susilo Adiyono.

Sumberkerto Hamlet, Plaosan Village is known as one of the villages producing coffee and sugar cane. Most of the people work as farmers. This becomes the idea to process waste, especially organic waste, into useful fertilizer so that it can increase plant productivity.

Aliif, a 2022 FH UB student, acted as the main speaker in this activity. He explained in detail about the definition of waste, the correct waste processing method, and the negative impacts if waste is not processed properly. This activity was guided by Shalsa as the Master of Ceremony, who ensured that the event ran smoothly from the beginning to the end.

The series of events began with socialization regarding the importance of organic waste processing to reduce the negative impact on the environment. Furthermore, participants were invited to take part in practical training in making eco-enzyme compost fertilizer using agricultural EM4 activator as the main ingredient to decompose organic waste.

Chris Eola, Head of PKM Group 8, Faculty of Law, Universitas Brawijaya, Sumberkerto Hamlet, explained that the purpose of this activity was to increase public awareness in managing organic waste responsibly. With the education provided, it is hoped that the community can implement this organic waste processing practice in their environment, so that it can reduce the volume of waste that goes to the final disposal site

The participants gave a positive response to this event, hoping that similar activities can continue to be carried out in the future to improve environmental quality and the welfare of the community as a whole. (dziila/wdd/UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
