This year, the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) is once again hosting an international conference featuring reputable speakers from both domestic and international institutions. The event, called ICON LATERALS V (International Conference on Language, Literary, and Cultural Studies – V), will be held at the UB campus in Malang, Indonesia, over two days from Friday to Saturday (10/4-5/2024). The conference is conducted in a hybrid system, allowing offline and online participation.

This conference serves as an international forum to provide researchers with a platform to present and discuss advancements in collaborative research. Additionally, it is an opportunity to share experiences and new research methodologies. The event is open to participants from various countries interested in language, literature, and cultural studies.

The theme of this international conference is Beyond the Page: Reimagining Literature, Language, and Culture in a Digital Age. The core of this theme lies in recognizing how digital technology can transform how we create, consume, and interpret literary and artistic works, as well as how we teach and learn languages. It is because digital platforms offer new opportunities for artists, writers, and scholars to connect with audiences worldwide while presenting new challenges in preserving cultural diversity and ensuring that a variety of voices can be heard.

The two-day event is attended by 150 seminar participants from both domestic and international institutions. From Indonesia, the participants come from various universities and institutions such as UGM, Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang, BRIN, PT HEADWAY, POLINEMA Malang, UNPAD, UNAIR, STAN, UPI, UMS, Universitas PGRI Indraprasta, UNY, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, ITB, IAIN Langsa, UNKHAIR, Universitas Widya Darma, UNHAS, Universitas Darussalam Gontor, UNESA, UNNES, UNSOED, UNILA, UI, UB, UIN SUKA, and many more.

Meanwhile, international participants come from various institutions such as the School of Humanities, The University of Sydney, Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Monash University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Osaka University, Leiden Institute for Area Studies (LIAS), Leiden University, Guangxi Normal University, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Iowa State University, and Kazan Federal University, Russia.

The opening ceremony of this event took place on October 4, 2024, in the Auditorium of FCS UB, led by the Dean, Hamamah, S.Pd., M.Pd., Ph.D. In her opening remarks, Hamamah stated that the goal of this conference is to recognize the significant impact of digital technology on the study of literature, arts, linguistics, and language education while acknowledging the role of multiculturalism in shaping these fields.

“In today’s increasingly digital world and diverse global landscape, where technological advancements coincide with new forms of interaction between people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, discussions about digitalization and multiculturalism are timely and relevant. Therefore, this conference serves as a platform for academics and researchers worldwide to engage in such discussions,” she explained.

The sub-themes addressed in this academic conference include Digital Humanities, Literature and Media Culture, Literature and Mobilities, Critical Discourse Analysis, Applied Linguistics Studies, Language and Gender/Language, Identity, and Gender, Multimodal or Digital Literacy, Bilingualism and Multilingualism, Language Maintenance and Planning Policy, Translation and Interpreting Studies, Corpus-based Studies, Language and Tourism, Intercultural Communication and Global Citizenship, and Cultural Studies.

ICON LATERALS V also invites the following keynote speakers, they are (1) Aniko Hatoss, Ph.D., from the University of New South Wales, Australia; (2) Prof. Emeritus Mohamad Mokhtar Abu Hassan from the University of Malaya, Malaysia; (3) Dr. Jochem Van Den Boogert from Leiden University, Netherlands; (4) Dr. Yeo Kah Sin Dennis from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; and (5) Dr. Aji Setyanto, M.Litt., from UB, Indonesia.

Participants of this event can choose whether they want to be the presenters or audience participants. Presenters are required to submit a paper, which will go through a selection process. Participants whose papers pass the selection will be allowed to present at the conference.
