The Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya (FCS UB), was holding an international conference that presents reputable experts nationally and internationally. The event was the ICON LATERALS IV (International Conference on Language, Literary and Cultural Studies – IV), a part of the ICON LATERALS conferences.
The Scientific Meeting was held for two days, from July 11 to July 12, 2023. This meeting operated on a hybrid system, offline and online. The international forum aimed to provide space for researchers to present and discuss the progress of their research results. In addition, this forum assisted academicians around the globe to share and discover new knowledge out of the recent researches. This event was open to presenters and participants from various countries in the field of language, literature, and culture.
The activity lasted for two days and was attended by 117 seminar participants and 51 workshop participants from Indonesia and overseas. From Indonesia, the participants came from various universities and institutions, namely, UNPAD, UM, Unesa, Sam Ratulangi Manado, BRIN, UI, Alaudin University Makassar, UGM, Unsoed, Medan State University, Unri, UIN Jakarta, UMY, Univ Trunojoyo, Khairun University Ternate, UIN Surabaya, Sanata Dharma, Unand, Udayana, Bangka Belitung, Balikpapan University, and others. Meanwhile, participants from abroad came from the University of Strathclyde UK, Iowa State University, National Sun Yat Sen University Taiwan, and Aberdeen University UK.
The opening session for the conference took place on July 11, 2023, at the Auditorium Building B, FCS UB, and it was officially opened by the dean of FCS UB, Hamamah, Ph.D. In her remarks, Hamamah stated that the event aims to acknowledge the significant impact of digital technologies on the study of literature, arts, linguistics, and language education while recognizing multiculturalism’s role in shaping these fields.
“In today’s increasingly digitalized and diverse world, where technological advancements coincide with new forms of interaction among people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, the discussion on digitalization and multiculturalism is both timely and pertinent. Therefore, this conference serves as a platform for academics and researchers from all over the world to engage in such discussions,” she stated.
The sub-themes raised in this scientific meeting include; Digital Literature as a New Genre, Gender Representation in Digital Media, Digital Humanities in Literary, Multilingualism, and Multiculturalism, Language, Literary, and Culture in Virtual Worlds, Language Learning in Virtual Reality, Applied Linguistics Studies, and Critical Discourse Analysis.
The ICON LATERALS IV activity also invited keynote speakers, including Prof. Heather Zwicker (The University of Queensland, Australia), Prof. Hiroki Ogasawara (Kobe University, Japan), Prof. Hsueh-Hua Chuang (National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan), Ismatul Khasanah, Ph.D. (Brawijaya University, Indonesia), Syariful Muttaqin, Ph.D. (Brawijaya University, Indonesia), and Aris Saraswati, M.Hum., Ph.D. (University of Indonesia, Indonesia).
Participants who participate in this activity could choose two options: presenters with publications or presenters without publications. Presenters with publications were required to submit papers and submitted papers will be selected. Correspondingly, participants who have passed the selection could present at the conference.
In addition, papers that meet the publication requirements will be published in EAI Proceedings and accredited journals (SINTA 2 – 5). This year, ICON LATERALS had published 4th times in EAI proceedings and therefore, the proceedings could be registered for the Scopus indexation. [dts]
